I'm not sure I will have a definite answer on this matter but from what the Original Poster linked and showed, it looks pretty doable to re-use the Nvidia backplate.

I would revise what the website says as it is quite misleading. Possibly write that it's possible but not supported or something professional yet doesn't make you accountable.

Also the EVGA GTX 1080 SC backplate is compatible as well.
