Electric Vs. Gas Cooking?

Hi all,

At my parents place they've always had a gas double over and separate hob.

I'm going into my own place soon and I will need to fit a kitchen. It's likely I will need to get the gas pipes adjusted if I go for gas. I've always been under the impression gas cooking was better/preferred? Is that true?

Any disadvantages with electric? As i'm thinking of going the electric route.
Does electric cooking work out cheaper more expensive do you think?

Cheers

Gas better as more controllable especially on the hob. From memory gas hob plus electric oven is the ideal situation.

Electric hob cooking is more expensive. It takes much longer to boil a pan of water and the heat remains which continues the cooking/boiling whereas gas you can reduce the flames immediately.

My parents always had gas hob and oven.

Moving out last year we have an electric hob and oven.

Far prefer the gas hob as our electric hob seems to take much longer to warm up but then far harder to control temp. compared to gas but do find the electric oven seems a more even temperature and warms quicker.

Hmm gas hob + electric oven would be possible.
Although I was thinking of getting one of them electric range cookers with the oven below and the hob on top.

I'm forced to use an electric hob in my new place, and it's not that bad if you get the right kind.

I got a Whirlpool Ceramic jobby like this:

MUCH better than normal hotplates, but still not gas hob level.

Gas hob.
Electric fan assisted oven (I have non fan assisted, it's rubbish).

Gas overs are alright but don't quite cook as evenly, and if the spark mechanism ever goes you won't wanna be the one shoving his hand in with a cigarette lighter to get it going.

Electric hobs are an effin nightmare when you are used to gas...

/thread. :p
Tell me about it, you spend an age waiting for it to heat up, get frustrated and crank it up to 9, then it's too hot. Electric also turns on and off to keep the temp regulated. Gas hobs react instantly and it's a predictable constant heat.

Gas is so much better than electric, we've got a gas hob in our student house and a big 6 hob at work and I prefer it so much more to the electric hob back home, it's much more controllable than the electric hobs.

We've got a Hotpoint similar to that and the hob is an absolute nightmare to control. :(

I remember first moving into to my house which had an Electric hob. I either would burn things beyond recognition or under cook them.

Even the simplest tasks such as cooking pasta / rice became such a chore that I would end up throwing away several pans worth before I got something which I could eat...

It got ripped out within 3 months..

Induction electric does not have heat remain in the ceramic part (as there is no ceramic part)
Induction electric works as well as gas, just needs the correct pans for it

So you have to go buy special/different pans so you can use the leccy hob as well as a gas hob?

I know, get gas and use any bloody pan :p

For induction you need different pans, as it doesn't head the surface but rather uses "magnets" (to coin a phrase from Jack O'Neill)
