Elite - 25yrs old...

i couldn't get the sharewear version of FFE to install on my w7 64-bit. It doesn't like 64-bit operating systems

Can i ask? So is the only real difference between Eilite and it's sequels and X3 (apart from GFX/age) is the ability to land on planets?

You couldn't land on planets in Elite, but you could in its 2 sequels. The flight mechanism between Elite and the 2 sequels was also changed, Elite has a very simple arcade like systems where as Frontier / First Encounters went for realism with a newtonian system.

so the difference between elite and x3 is basically non? Gameplay wise?

Elite is a far more simplistic game than its sequels or X-3.

X-3 is basically like Frontier / First Encounters on steriods. In the Elite games you can't buy factories or run fleets of ships like you can in X-3.

What a fantastic game Elite was, I spent a huge amount of time playing that game and loved every minute of it.

Did you ever once though think,"What would it be like if all these ships were being flown by mates or people around the world?" at the time? no I didnt either!

Its good to see plenty of people here remember it too I thought I was old! :D

Hah I did! I remember being totally awestruck the day I heard someone somewhere was playing elite on a LAN and had managed to fly a Sun!

Hi m8 I have FFE with mods running ok in win7 64 not sure why you have this problem.

Apart from the landing on the planets FFE has a newtonian system and FFEs universe makes x3 look tiny in comparison the reward of a kill in FFE is huge when done correctly because of the newtonian physics, maybe a little difficult for some but you don't need a astrophysics doctorate :D

Remember this is a 14 year old game so it will look rubbish compared to todays stuff hope this helps.

ps. Im not bashing x3.

Edit ah i see melchy has answered most of your questions already!

X3 goes out of it's way to remind you that you are playing a game with it's unbelievably stupid Cahoona Bakeries and cattle ranches in space. It also has NSEW jump gates in all the shoe box like areas that make up it's, atmosphere breaking, (excuse the pun), lattice like universe.

I loved Elite and Frontier played them to bits.

I bought my first ever PC just to play a game called Jumpgate which seemed like an Elite type MMO. For all those arguing over the merits of newtonian versus arcade combat you should try a trial of Jumpgate and experience the sublime joy of combat using the Jumpgate semi newtonian DANCER engine.

If any future Elite game came out this is how I would want my flight mechanics, the best of both worlds.

I still have my boxed BBC B Elite sitting in a pile with the Advanced User Guide and other stuff. Those happy days will not come again... I just remembered that after a while you'd get 'missions' to complete which really opened a new dimension to the game.
Starship Command was also great!
I remember Braben & Bell did another with a spaceman floating round a spaceship, accompanied by monsters. The controls were for the spaceman's arms and legs and when a monster floated by, you could punch or kick at it! I just can't remember the name of it though.

I wouldn't quite agree with that. I found X3 a lot slower. I also found Frontier very easy to get to grips with. Where as I found X3 annoying.

Jusy my perspective.

I didn't mean to imply that X-3 is better than Elite or Frontier / First Encounters as in my opinion it isn't. My reference to X-3 being Frontier on steroids was just a reference to the fact that there are loads of options to do stuff in X-3 that can't be done in Fontier / First Encounter such as buying factories, fleets of ships etc. I have bought all the X games and have never got anywhere near as far in them as I have in the Elite games. The X games can be just a bit to complex and hard to pick up at times.

Elite is an icon of video gaming. David Barben and Ian Bell broke the mould with that master piece.

With Star wars and Star Trek doing the movie rounds and the V on telly. Elite grabbed you and brought you into this sci-fi world. Even tho it was very simplistic, it got your imagination writing novels.

Still to this day, I don't think I have seen any space game come close to the magic of Elite or Elite 2: Frontier.

I remember ripping off the cover disk on Amiga Format to watch that rolling intro of Elite 2: Frontier :D

I remember going away on holiday the day I got my copy of Elite 2. I couldn't play it, so read the manual back to back over and over. Didn't it come with a little story book too?

Yeh im sure it came with a little novel.

I got a free black Frontier tee-shirt too :P

I spent a lot of time years as a kid playing Elite on ye olde BBC B. Got to Dangerous IIRC. Elite, Revs, Starship Command and Strykers Run were all fantastic.

Found the BBC in the loft a few years ago. Fired it up and was rather disappointed to find the original Elite disc wouldn't read any more. :(

Still got the Dark Wheel Novella somewhere. Seem to recall it was a good read, then again I was about 9 when I read it.

Any decent BBC emulators for the Mac out there that'll play Elite?

Not got a mac myself so I can't be sure but there is a version of "BeebEM" for the Mac here.
