Elite! Very possibly!

“And eve is carp, you don't even earn your xp you just have to wait for the clock.. It sucks IMO off course.
only 13 players online..”

You know that’s always what I liked about Eve. All opinion of course, but I like the idea of skills over xp and levels. I always thought levels and xp was a silly way to do things most of the time.

With levels you just get a bunch of people rushing to level up as much as possible and you alwaysend up grinding just to level up even when not rushing.

There is no grinding, rushing or max level in Eve. The timer based skillpoints also means less power gamers wrecking the game.

You need Elite 3 First Encounters with that err what’s it called. JJEF something that lets you play in windows you can even alter the resolution. Will check the name when I get home.

I wonder how many people know frontier was only the 2nd of the 3 games.
Yeah ive been there and done that. Im talking about frontier ( the second game ) which i much prefered to the third outing.

Elite was excellent, and the spectrum version was the best of the 8bits (showing my age here) been playing it for 2 days on a Spectrum Emulator and already got over 100,000 credit and rated at "Dangerous", i guess thats what happens if you sell skag,or slaves!!

I have played a few of the remakes, Oolite was ok, but i would love to see a remake from the original makers

Codswallop Sir! The best 8 bit version was undoubtedly and unquestionably the 128k Elite released for the BBC Master. The best 16bit varient was ArcElite, relased on the Achimedes.

Ah, the good old day's of the BBC Micro & Master computers. Between Elite and Repton I'm surprised I ever left school with anything other than a thank you and good bye.

It'll never come out.
Everyones gonna have to settle with the 'X' games for now. :)
Which, despite critisisms, once you spend some decent time with the game learning it, is actually very good.

If he could marry the trading, mining, mission, guild system from EVE onto a Jumpgate like flight engine with some reasonable graphics he could have my money every month till I die. If he pulls some point and click EVE crap on us instead of twitch piloting I'll curse him to his grave.

It's practically dead now but Jumpgate's flight engine was a thing of beauty, producing some of the most satisfying skill based fighting ever imo.

Very true, point & click just isn't Elite. Elite is first person, albeit at the controls of a Cobra Mk.III. Actually, would that make Elite the first true 'first person' game?

to be honest elite never grabbed me but i loved frontier on the amiga, It would be great to have a modern version of elite. As for elite coming out, expect it out at the same time as Duke Nukem Forever ;)

Another game i did ejoy along the same sort of lines was Codename Matt on the Spectrum anyone remember that?

I liked codename matt or was it codename matt 2 ? . switching to diffirent gund for different tasks. Starraiders 2 is a game id like to see remade into a fully fledged 3d game ;)

back to frontier which i played on the amiga, I remember it being handy to start at mars , head for phobos and blast it with mining lasers untill you got elite rating ;)

E4 is under dev but many of the aspects of the game are actually being developed for other Frontier projects first. David Braben has confirmed that the game 'The Outsider' is as much a testbed for technology to be transferred to E4.

I am personally very glad that the game will be primarily developed for a single player or a co-op multiplayer situation so that I don't have to deal with stacks of pre-pubescent individuals running around going "U R SUCH A N00B" and "I am the L33T HAX0RZZZzzzzz !!!!111oneoneeleven".

As a player I don't want to have to compete with the people out there that have no job and can spend their lives playing computer games - Elite is about my story and I don't want it tainted by disrespectfull idiots. David is much of the same opinion:

To be honest that's my view too - ie the single player is the more exciting experience. Tight co-op can also work well (eg Halo), whereas MMOs can be as much about managing antisocial or intolerant behaviour of some players, as about gameplay.

Handy but unfulfilling. I've always found that if I play with a cheat the game very rapidly loses interest for me. There was always some real satisfaction over earning enough money to upgrade your ship or start trading in more expensive commodities.

I spent most, if not all of my childhood with my best mate up in my attic room playing Elite 2: frontier its class and still is...

are emulators illegal??

“Talk of emulators isnt allowed here, but you can download Frontier and First Encounters from here.”
Just remember that’s the cut down version of and First Encounters without the videos and its not free. You have to pay after 30days.

I had Codename Matt and Codename Matt II on the CPC-464. In that period - these games were really entertaining and had a bit of depth to them. They weren't Elite/Frontier but you could do all sorts of seriously cool stuff.

Eg. Your ship is actually made up of all sorts of sub-systems which can fail. So if you come out of a fight you might live but with no engines, guns etc. A sitting duck in space. So you have to divert energy to those area and tell your little droids (assuming they are alive) to get to work on the damaged areas.

I played Frontier - Elite II on the Amiga. It was also the first game I ordered for the PC. Still got it on CD. Classic, and unbeatable - but any games we have today.

Pray to the temple of Braben that we might play Elite 3 (oops sorry there was that First Encounters mess, I mean 4!) some day soon.
