Elysium

It immediately made me think of the movie Gladiator.

"Three weeks from now, I will be harvesting my crops. Imagine where you will be, and it will be so. Hold the line! Stay with me! If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you're already dead!"

Its also the name of the ship in the sci-fi film Pandorum

Saw it on Friday night. Thought it was pretty average. The first half of the movie felt very odd, can't put my finger on why just felt a bit rushed and plugged together.

Great film.. visually looked stunning. Great performances from damon and district-9 chap. Sound was fantastic, but why the hell did they revoice all of jodie foster's lines? Her ADR performance was way off, she had so many close-ups where her voice was so clearly dubbed. I can only assume they changed the script going into post production, or her vocal performance (or accent?) was way off on set. Disappointing, but ignoring that.. it's definitely worth a watch.

Its alright, not as good as District 9 but doesnt appear to really aim for that. More than serviceable, enjoyed the killing scenes, very visceral :). Preferred the performance from the District 9 chap compared to Matt Damon really, he does seem quite versatile. Didnt show enough of Elysium though, get no idea what thats all about or what the inhabitants think of the Earth folk...

Very much reminded me of the ISA world from the Killzone series, very strong colour palette similarities...

Summary : very disappointing, save your money, this is no D9 sequel.

I suggest you rent/buy In Time, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1637688 its about £3.5 on ebay or simply watch trailer 2 and be done with it.

Where shall I start;

  • I don't like politics dressed-up or hidden this way, or if I'm being generous, the story line has been forced to fit a very simplistic allegory.
  • Foster was terrible, straight from the cornflake box
  • You are constantly taken away from the movie (verisimilitude) by silly storyline decisions;
  • The station has no defenses, so they have to make a call to a man on the surface who fires these hand-held missiles can that achieve escape velocity and destroy enemy ships.
  • The technology gap between the station and the surface is simply unbelievable
  • Humans build robots??? (Another failure shared with Total Recall)
  • The Kruger revival was totally implausible, the guy wouldn't even have a head left to rebuild.
  • Again, characters switch their alliances just to fit the plot.
  • There are many more examples, but basically all the errors start from a poor story which is then poorly executed.

For a medium budget $100m film with A-grade stars, I expect much better.

Summer 2013 scores;

Iron-Man-3 3/10 (utterly storyless)

Oblivion 7/10 (least bad)

After Earth 1/10 (what were they thinking)

Man of Steel 5/10 (simply no where to go with the story)

World War Z 4/10 (random scenes mixed together)

Elysium 5/10 (good demo for your big TV)

mixed reviews between average and good?

2d or 3d? which is best

There was a 3d option for this?

I liked it, can see that District 9 was a massive template for the stylizing but that's not a bad thing, look forward to seeing what else Blomkapf (sp?) can do.

It was great to see the protagonist from D9 as such a bad ass in this, what a transformation.

Just seen this and i enjoyed it. Great escapism and visually it is one of the best films i have ever seen.

However, i have a few big problems with the plot

Who runs the world? ( girls! ha :D..i digress) Is there an Earth president or is the president in Elysium the president of the Earth and Elysium population? I want to know who controls what to be honest. Regardless, is there no more democracy anymore? Why can just changing who the president is in the Elysium system actually change who the president is. Wouldnt there be an uproar?

This leads me on to the next point. The president saw Spyder and Max reboot the system and change the citizenships/president...so wouldnt he just change it back as it had been sabotaged by a group of criminals? :confused:

I know that the Armadyne guy reprogrammed it but if (as we are led to believe) "what the computer says goes" then the Armadyne guy basically controlled Elysium ( and/or the Earth :rolleyes:)

Also, Kruger coming back to life annoyed me. if you can bring people back from the dead like that, why was no attempt made at saving the Armadyne chap? We saw at the end that they had copius amounts of medical shuttles that automatically went down to save citizens...so why didnt that happen or why wasnt that put into motion.

Furthermore, why do they have all those medical shuttles? We saw that everyone in Elysium had there own medical pod that cured everything so what were they for? Presumably they were only built to service Earth..yet they were not used until the end. This would further mean that Elysium had **** loads of spare medical pods sitting about but just left people on Earth to die. What has happened to humanitarian aid in this goofy world?

*and breathe* I still enjoyed it as a bit of sci-fi rubbish but it certainly wasnt very clever.

I would give it 7.5/10. It had potential to be a classic but we needed more politics/explanation of how society actually worked.

Not seen this yet, but I am a little disappointed to see this getting some pretty average comments from people that have seen it. District 9, is a fantastic film, so I was expecting Blomkamp to make something equally as good with Elysium, given the talent he seems to have. Maybe D9 was too good. I shall definitely still see it though.

District 9 is better. Elysium is worth a watch though. It isnt a BAD film. Just don't go there expecting an amazing plot or anything near thought provoking.

I liked it, but it certainly could have been better.

There's a minor annoyance ;

Kruger shoots off 4 rockets to deal with the 3 ships, 2 hit their target, 1 misses, did the 4th missile just get bored?

Theres a much bigger annoyance
How did the rebel ship land in the end with not a single alarm raised and no robots coming in to fight them? Yet every other time that was standard procedure/reaction

it was massively disappointing. rubbish plot and no character development for anyone who wasn't played by matt damon. apart from a few flyby shots, what did we get to learn about elysium and the people who lived there? nothing.

oh best stick in a poorly kid to tug on the heartstrings. :rolleyes:

on the plus side, it's always nice to see bits of body getting shredded and sharlto copley made an entertaining bad guy with a ludicrously OTT south african accent. :p

Wasn't as good as D9, but I did like how all the characters had flaws. (that's why I like farscape
65/100
Oblivion is by far my fab film this year

I thought the president on E was president of both

The reason the shuttle way end landed was because of the distraction.. Poor excuse

Is hard to believe the system couldn't be changed, but from what I thought only one person could do that.. The guy who's head it was taken from

I guessed the med shuttles Were like our site ambulance that's why they had them.. They automatically went down when the computer determined the need was greater in earth than E

Most of my issues come from one computer, side of things
He could bend metal with his hands? Lol
How did the pod at the end know it was the kids name?
Needed more robots
