EMA

my parents pay the same taxes that your parents/you (didn't bother to check your age) pay. And its a lame excuse really, if they didn't give it to family's with less income, then they would probably ship it to other EU country's along with the other millions in child benefits!

Apparently not.

I heard higher earners pay more tax. Can't remember where though...

One of the main objects of EMA was too make sure kids were turning up too college and arriving on time. Last year 3 kids were in my electrical class who were on EMA and guess what? They didn't miss a day :D Also 2 of these 3 passed all the exams which when compared to their GCSE results is quite strange!! It seems to work from my experience so therefore I have no problems with my TAX going on it as it's money well spent imho.

Plus it's only given too kids who's parents don't earn a great deal which I also thinks a good idea as personally I find these kids on a whole to be more grateful and certainly appreciate the value of money better..

There shouldn't be an 'incentive' to turn up to college, it's not compulsory and you go there on your own accord. If you don't turn up that's your problem,

And how on earth is one of the main objectives of EMA to ensure people turn up when you are financially assessed for it? If the main objective was as an incentive to turn up wouldn't it apply to everyone?

I don't think anyone approves of the EMA scheme, apart from those that receive it.

It's pretty much a no-no to ask questions about EMA on here and for a damn good reason, too. Phone them up if you're that bothered about pocket money. You'll soon be cursing it when you actually have a job, and realise you get taxed to the hilt, of which a percentage goes to paying kids to go to school. (It sounds so insane! Paying kids... lol)

It’s like the student loans, if you r parents don’t earn much you don’t have to pay them back. Well when I was at college my parents earnt too much so I had to get a repayable loan, even though I had to pay it back myself and my parents didn’t help at all! Absolutely stupid.

Oh and all this about allowing people from poor families to go to college is irrelevant. That’s what the non-repayable £3000 maintenance loan that they get given each year is for.

Where the hell can I get this 'non-repayable' 3000 maintenance loan you speak of? My parents give me no help and personally I dont expect them to as they cant afford it, so why do I now have a loan 13k loan which I will have to pay back and will probably increase because I have the cheek to want to do a masters degree? And thats before they doubled the interest rate above inflation.

Anyway back ontopic, I do agree that the EMA is a waste of space there though, if they wanted to help, pay for bus passes or some such, I wouldnt give a kid £30 and let them spend it on what they wanted, thats just plain idiotic.

Not everyone needs an incentive to turn up ;)
My mate Paddy at college would never have achieved what he did last year if it wasn't for EMA, his GCSE's were awful as he hardly ever turned up!

A lot of bitter and jealous people here me thinks

They do that as well, even I managed to get my train ticket price halfed because I'm on low income as I'm a part-time youth worker. Your parents earnings don't come into travel discounts :-) .

I get it and am due about a months worth. Just couldn't be bothered to go and sort it out yet :P. Does everyone else in college get card things that your tutor needs to sign each class? Thats what i get and need to get done, but our tutors are on strike and are refusing to sign them lol.

Not that bothered really, i still have about £500 left over from last year.

Im not saying everyone does this but my first year of college, everyone who was on EMA did no work and said "we are only here for the money", Now i didnt report them as a few were good friends and i dont like being the middle apple, but when the teachers hear it they do nothing about it, carry on and sign the sheet.

Second year the bums got kicked and we only had a few messers but imo, EMA should only be given to people who are achieving their work to the standards set and are getting on, doing their work.

Thats just my view, as everyone who was in college had a part time job anyway, not like they couldnt afford £5/£10 a week.

Woo thanks for reminding me actually, need to fill the form out again for this year!!! I get 30 poonds a week cos my mum earns 7k a year and has to pay for everything in and around the house. But im lucky i earn £100 a week from my job as well so its mazing!

hey guys anyone on ema and have u been paid yours yet, im in my second week of college and no sign of it yet

Aint got it here either mate, appearently its due friday next week :(

and for those saying its a waste of money - well to be fair i will pay it back in taxes in the future and i do actualy need it to travel to collage (infact it dosent even cover half of that!) and i dont come from a wealthy family - money is tight.

EMA is a big taboo on here, a lot of people myself included think it is an utter waste of time and tax-payers money.
There is no fair way of giving out money to school kids, i wasn't paid to return to school because my parents earn too much but didn't lavish money on me whereas some who do get money handed out left right and center from their parents.
I'm not in the mood for a debate before anyone has a go.

If you want to know when it is coming phone them.

Tell me about it. One of my friends got EMA and went to a private school for free simply because he lived with his mum, who doesn't have an income. His dad on the other hand...

Don't get me wrong, some people who get it do need it, but the means testing is very poor.

Why isnt the priviledge of being at the recieving end of one of the better education systems in this world enough? :(

When I was going through school and college etc we used to joke that we should be getting paid to be there, but it really was a joke that none of us could ever even have started to imagine would come to fruition.

I agree that some topics get trashed whenever they are mentioned here on the forums, but this is one topic which evokes the same response from all not at the recieving end, and lets face it its the ones who dont get the EMA that are essentially paying for it.

Having skim read the responses, I only saw one person who wasnt flippantly flaunting the fact the money they are being bribed to stay in education with was being used for everything but what it is officially intended. Every time I see an EMA thread, I think its likely i'll voice my opinion as many others in here have as being quite frank, the whole concept is absolutely disgraceful.

I cant say if I was at that age now, I would refuse EMA, but if I was that age but at my current mental development I can tell you outright, I would refuse that money and make a stink about it at the same time (and become hugely unpopular ;) but you get used to that...)

Right so it's just the people who's parents earn under a certain amount per year that need incentives. Wow that TOTALLY makes sense!!1111one
