EMA

If your household earns over 30k why do you want 30 pounds a week? Seriously. I get the £30 and one of my friends is constantly moaning that he doesn't recieve it.

£30 is still £30. After tax, £30k looks a lot more like £20k. £1200 tax free is a reasonable chunk of that.

because its still extremely likely that if your parents earn less than 30k they will be living in a lesser expensive house, and they probably wont charge you rent, or make you do your own food shopping, and if they did it wouldnt be loads anyway.

Whereas people with wealthier parents probably dont have to buy there own food or pay rent either, some are lucky enough to get pocket money(which only in the extreme ridiculous minority would be £30 or over a week), they would then have to work, whereas £30 is a lot of money for someone in college with no financial commitments.

Basically why should someone get £30 a week just because there parents are not as wealthy, what does parents income have to do with it? I got £12.50 a week pocket money whilst in college which wasnt enough, so I got off my backside and got a job working every night after college, whereas people on EMA didnt really have to bother, or work 1-2 nights a week.

just thought of something else really annoying.

With my above example which was true for most I knew in college its basically richer parents kid gets a job has less free/study time, poorer parents kid gets free money for college.

Then..

Apply to uni, poorer parents kid is given bursarys and grants to encourage them to go to uni, also given lower admission grades because from poorer area/family, whereas they had more time in college and went to the same school or whatever.
Theres someone who went to my college who applied for something which needed As, he was aloud Bs for being from a poorer family, had full EMA throughout college, and then got in with 2 Cs and a B, this is for a medical course. Whereas people I was friendly with who's parents had good jobs were very nervous since they needed the As, luckily they got them.

Why give so much money to people with low earning parents? They will get used to not having to lift a finger and continue the trend by getting a part time job or continuing sponging.

Believe it or not, but EMA was designed with parents in mind.

Don't they stop child benefits at the age of 16? I'm pretty sure my mum told me they stopped hers when I went to college. I'm not sure if it's called child benefits but everyone gets them. Why not just keep them going for two more years at a lower rate and scrap EMA?

I couldn't get EMA because they earned just over the £30k mark. Just because they earned more than £30k a year doesn't mean they give me £30 a week, buy me big screen tvs and ps3s. I had to work part time along with my studies to get the same amount as the lazy people who went to college just for EMA.
