Looks like it's over for Skype.

Microsoft has officially announced Windows 11, its new operating system which will replace the current version over the next few years.

Among all the new features are two seemingly small but related things that jumped out.

First - Microsoft Teams, the video-calling app which saw a boom during 2020's pandemic, will be integrated into Windows 11 by default.

And second - Skype will not be, for the first time in years.

As usual, a great piece of software before MS got hold of it. Revolutionary in the early 2000s, but it seems like MS just used it as a building block for Teams.

I personally haven't used it for years, but I know a few who still do on a daily basis.

Looks like MS want the VoIP monopoly.

Wasn't Windows 10 meant to be the last Windows which would then just forever be updated?

Technically this is was what it was supposed to be, it's only a service pack with an interface update. But they felt it was a big enough change to call it W11

Pretty sure MS only bought Skype for it's messaging protocols them turned that into Teams. But yeah as long as you can disable Teams somehow (tick box or registry) then it looks OK. Not sure about a centred start menu though.

No, this is a famous misquote. What was said was on release that it was the final version.
No, "last version of Windows" is the quote.

Jerry Nixon, Microsoft employee: "Right now we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10."

This obviously wasn't said by the CEO, but Microsoft never corrected the statement, which you would expect if an employee was making false statements, so everyone took it at face value.

In any case, Windows 11 will at least be a free upgrade.

Can never understand how big companies can get something as basic as a messaging app so wrong. I'm looking at both Microsoft and Google here.

Skype was great, then Microsoft bought it and ruined it. Then they made it such a confusing and complicated mess everyone stopped using it. There's different versions, different platforms........and that's before we talk about how it looks and performs.

Teams will and should become the defacto collaboration tool. Make a standalone teams chat app by all means, but for gods sake just make one!

Thinking back, I'm sure Microsoft had another chat app on Windows lol It's a bit like the mail and calendar app which doesn't know outlook exists. Sigh!

The BBC ran a fantastic article last week about Windows 11. It said due to covid19 and home working, Microsoft staff actually started to realise what their customers wanted. They were all set to launch Windows 10X on dual screen devices hahaha!!!
