Embrace, Extend, Extinguish... Skype could go out the window

Teams is a work app, its designed for productivity and enterprise stuff.

Not really sure how your going to get grandma on teams for a quick chat which was always skypes thing.

I just hope that I can manage my work / Personnel accounts on windows 11 well.

This mean they are going to put Teams on Xbox as well? Can see me using my old Xbox and Kinect as a meetings machine if they do.

Looks like it's over for Skype.

As usual, a great piece of software before MS got hold of it. Revolutionary in the early 2000s, but it seems like MS just used it as a building block for Teams.

I personally haven't used it for years, but I know a few who still do on a daily basis.

Looks like MS want the VoIP monopoly.

Hardly surprising, SfB got awful in the last few years. As its a prime communication tool for businesses, as more of them moved over to Teams, it was clearly bye-bye for the Skype model.

Love Teams. We binned off Skype for Business end of 2019, never looked back.

We finally binned of SfB this year, although had been running both since last year. I can understand some peoples complaints about Teams, it's quite different to SfB and it's predecessors (Lync, Office Communicator, and Windows Messenger).

Ironically the things that make Teams great were the things that killed the first attempt at making MSN Messenger a social media rival. They tried before with the app called '3 degrees' as well.

Microsoft have just released Teams for home that looks pretty nice and is closer to how I remember Skype than "proper" Teams.

It's designed for home use rather than business. I'm guessing they're trying to capture the Zoom market back.

Skype died when Zoom became a verb

I remember that - "Skype me!"

Skype was great back in the World of Warcraft days of 2007. Us guildies would have video calls, well over a decade before Zoom became a thing. Inside of the WoW game though, we used Teamspeak for VoIP. It was good for breakout rooms e.g. main raid room, warlock class room, paladin class room etc.

Nowadays, I associate MS Teams as being work-related as it replaced MS Lync and it works pretty well with Outlook in that you can set the meets up in the Outlook calendar.

I associate Zoom as being home-related for family and friends. I find it weird that people use Zoom for work-related.

Edit: if we're using phones only, then WhatsApp is the easiest to use for video calls.

literally never used zoom in my life.
people still use skype

People/organisations have their preferred platforms. At work we use MS Teams or Zoom, at uni we use Google Hangouts, my family and friends tend to use Whereby or Facebook video calling. It's all just preference. My wife's work still uses Skype, but that's the only place I know that does.

Soon enough though, Skype will be phased out and replaced by MS Teams, that much is certain. I imagine that, even though Skype is still available as an optional download, MS will gradually remove functionally or stall development so that people move over to MS Teams. They may even kill Skype altogether by the time Windows 12 comes around.

Skype... intermittent, crappy video. Was never that impressed.

Teams is OK. It's getting better, but I won't be using it for personal calls I suspect. I have security concerns with it being used for work tbh.

Teams???

What is that?? :p

We only just got Skype for business a few months ago...We only updated to Windows 10 a few months ago as well! With the Windows 10 update, we finally got rid of Office 2013, and are now on Office 2016! Cutting edge!!!!!!

We'll probably get Windows 11 once Windows 99 is out :p:p

You were never cool unless you had Real Player :D

They are, essentially though it is MS's version of Facetime.
