Emmigration anyone?

Where in California. Where I spent most of my time there was barely a single visible person. keep well clear of the bottom 1/3 of CA and your mostly by yourself, except Yosemite on a summer weekend and Tahoe etc. Up norht is amazing, forests and volcanoes...

I was in LA (I can hear the groans now!). But honestly, I really enjoyed it - I had a great circle of friends, my company was wonderful, and I lived in a nice area. LA has a lot of downsides, but I loved it - and I'm the least 'Hollywood' person you can imagine! One of the most abiding memories of the last few years was standing high in the Hollywood Hills in perfect silence looking over the city.

But then LA, unless you're a multimultimillionaire, is a city for young people - it's not somewhere that I would raise a family, hence the dilemma between there, where I could take a job easily, and somewhere quieter. Midwest US - Minnesota/Colorado - is much more my type of environment, but I couldn't work as a lawyer there.

Hope to go to Canada one day, I've got a few family members there... one auntie who basically has a mahoosive house to herself. :D

Considering NZ once I have my ITIL Q. I have family there....which helps...and is nice! The laid back attidude and sports culture appeals to me.

Same as some of the others here - the g/f lives over in the states and no way to get a visa which sucks
Too young to get married so thats out of the question.

Going to have a look at investment and setting up a company over here (US) and see if I can get round it that way!
Although I think the investment level is quite high.....

Bro just got back from New Zealand, and it is tempting.

I don't really see much of a future for me in this country, it's too expensive and crowded.

But I've got a long way to go before making any decisions.

I found everything pretty cheap there... though I guess if you're actually earning an NZ income then yes. I'd consider living there, much nicer society than Britain atm, people seemed more courteous, more laid back. Though i've noticed there is little competition for jobs and the average person isn't all that well qualified.
Got family out there so it'd be feasible for me to emmigrate there once I complete uni

Abilene, i'm an artist, i married a southern girl which was my reason for moving here but im glad i did, texans love the brits so i earn a very good living here.

Abilene is a great city, it's classed as a college town plus it has an airforce base here so you get a wide range of people living here. Everyone is really crazy but texans are the most friendly people ive ever met, you will have a blast here and not leave :D

But you need to keep your British citizenship so that you can pop back and use our health service.

Wrong. Blair changed the law so if your residency is out of the UK for 6 months or more you can't use it.

Annoys me when people accuse me of being a health tourist. I have NEVER used it. Despite paying years of tax before I left. I pay my way.
Lets just forget about all those asylum seekers using it upon entry eh?

done it :)

moved to dublin...its more expensive, no nhs and the traffic makes london and the m25 look like a nice drive in the country.

loving it though :)

I'm Always Baffled as to why people emigrate here. Massively expensive, Gridlock in Dublin every ****** day, the M50 motorway being Europes most expensive carpark. And a healthcare system barely managing to rival Romanias.

Nate

(great pubs though :) )

I wouldn't want to use it. The healthcare system might be "free" but it's stuck in the dark ages compared to the US. I mean, I can get free food by fishing around in the garbage outside - doesn't mean I want to tho :p

I heard about this guy aged 55 who moved to the US and his health insurance was £1000 per month, which he couldn't afford.

I like the US, but apparently it's not as cheap as you might think.

I think i'm going to move to a developing country and then i'll be able to have servants. :) May be Thailand, India, not sure though.

Health insurance aint anywhere near that much. And 99% of the time your comapny will be paying your health insurance.

American is a lot cheaper than the UK, no doubt about it. UK has pretty much the highest taxes of anywhere in the world, some of the most expensive produce and living costs, the most expensive housing in the world, yet the pay is not the greatest.

So much stealth tax in the UK as well, TV-licenses, extortionate council tax and water charges, road tax, extreme fuel tax, high european sales tax/VAT (compare it to the 0-7% in the US!).

You basically pay more in tax supporting the NHS than it would be to pay for health insurance in any case. The NHS wastes money on pointless thing like Tatoo removal which in no way has anything to do with someones health.

Oh yeah, if you move to a 3rd world country then you will earn a 3rd world country pay. unless you get rich 1st and then emmigrate you wont gain much. Somewhere like the US and you are better off while still having a proper career etc.
And in any case, I would move to the US even if the pay was half the UK. Money really doesn't come into for me.
