Empire Top 500 movies of all time

Don't get how Godfather is always number one, it is a damn good film but I judge the best films on rewatchability.

Yeah true, but surely it depends on the mood you're in. I can watch Friday 20 times and not get bored, but LOTR is a much better film, but I can't be bothered half of the time.

Thought that Top Gun was a bit hard done by! Legendary film :D Should definately have been above Unbreakable anyway! American Psycho is a little low down as well...

Gutted to see There Will Be Blood outside the top 100-think it's one of the best films of the last few years. Very gutted to see Pan's Labyrinth outside the top 100 as well-probably my favourite film!

Would have been nice to see The Hustler in the top 100 too...and what is the Usual Suspects doing out of the top 50!?!

Any guide that hasn't got Citizen Kain, one flew over the cuckoos nest, psycho, a clockwork orange, or the shining in it's top 10-20 isn't worth the paper it's written on, these films are masterpieces.

Fight club right up there says it all really, they are claiming fight club is better than raging bull ? with a straight face ? don't get me wrong it's a great film but it's not even in the top 100 of all time let alone 10th.

And The Dark Knight so high ? what's all that about ! :D it's a predictable been there done that forgetable action film with wooden acting from oldman and bale
even though they are great actors it's just the characters and script are rubbish.

The shining at #52 :D that's just laughable imo it's top ten easily, just it's opening sequence with that music is better than half the films on the list.

It's just daft to have a list like that anyway really, you should break it down more, like say 20 years or a decade. There's probably 100 black and white films I have never seen that are miles better than most of the stuff on there.

It's silly really I bet some people have never watched a film made before 1980 and in the same breath rate the dark knight and lord of the rings as the best films ever..

edit: and who the hell puts reservoir dogs at the high end of the top 100 :O

I agree with almost everything you've said. These polls are pointless, interesting point you make about the old b&w films, I was recently off work ill and bored, flicked through the terrestrial channels and watched a James Cagney film that isn't even one of his better known films yet everything about it was in a different league to most of the newer crap in that empire list, and I'd hazzard a guess that the majority of people who enter these polls are young-ish and like you say haven't seen anything pre1980 and prob switch off b&w films or even for eg a John Ford 1950's colour film, some of the films in the top 30 are laughable :p :o

I think this list shows the generation of people that voted on it. There's very few 1960s or older films in the top 50 or something which are absolute classics and if you've got a bunch of 20-30somethings voting, you're obviously going to get the better films of 80s to 90s voted highly, because this age range has only been really exposed to this era in cinema.

Watched v for vendetta last night because of this list reminding me i hadn't yet. My good god what a superb film.

I think it's a good list. I'm tired of seeing crap like Raging Bull, Midnight Express, Schindlers List etc always in the top spots. For me these type of films are totally unwatchable because of the heavy emotional toll associated with them. It's time to move on from the tired and predictible definition of what makes a good film. If the classics that didn't 'make it' are too low down, it obviously shows they have no sticking power and are out of touch with the current times.

That said, Empire magazine is a total load of ****. They bum the Dark Knight hard, when it's quite clearly a turd that will be forgotten about just like Bad Boys 2 or some other latest action film.

Good to see Jaws getting it's recognition, I've loved the film since being a child but have a totally different take on it from what I did back then.

If you havn't seen it for years get yourself a copy, forget it's a shark movue just watch it for the characters and interaction.......simply superb.
