So I have a 4890, and just picked up a cheap 240GT to use as a Phys/X card. What do I need to do to get it to work?

You will need the physx mod patch that allows you to use physx on nvidia cards when ati is present in the system and the latest set of gpu drivers that works with the mod.

elgoog to the rescue here.

Some games include physx files in the game folder, for these ones you will need to delete the files as it will use these instead of the modded ones to run and will not work as a result. Mirrors edge is an example.

It isn't too hard to set up and the effects while not game changing add a little bit more immersion. :)

Just got this done, works alright. I used the instructions from here:

http://www.ngohq.com/graphic-cards/17706-hybrid-physx-mod-v1-03-v1-04ff.html

Mirrors Edge was a bit of a fiddle, I copied the PhysXExtensions.dll from my Batman install. I'd only played it before on an 8600GT @ 720p so the jump to 1680x1050 with everything on full was some nice eyecandy.

Batman has some nice smoke effects, bit unrealistic but hey :) Again, i'd only played this on my PS3.

The 240 seems like a decent enough card to do this kind of work, it's single slot so fits in the otherwise restricted bottom PCIE slot on my motherboard, doesn't need an extra power lead and does have a fan to keep it a bit cooler. The card idles at 9W apparentlly, so not really adding any heat to the system.

Overall, thumbs up. A nice, if a bit silly upgrade for £70.

More silly than you think. A 4890 will sell for ~£95 on the MM.

£95 + £70 = £165.

£165 will get you a GTX460 1GB, which runs cooler, uses less power, has DX11, performs better than a 4890, and requires no driver mods or fuss to enable Physx.

I'd say swapping out for a single nvidia card makes more sense if you're looking to spend £70 to enable physx :)
