In what is turning into a graveyard of discontinued AMD processors, it has come to DailyTech's attention that a single-core Athlon 64 3000+ and 3200+ Socket 939 processors are getting the axe. AMD has just notified its distributors that it is terminating the Athlon 64 single-core Socket 939 3000+ and 3200+ components.

We’ve received confirmation that Socket 754 processors will indeed be available for a couple months after the early death of Socket 939. AMD Athlon 64 3700+ and 4000+ will be the first to get the axe on July 2nd of this year. Right before 2007 rolls around AMD intends on discontinuing seven Socket 939 and 754 processors. AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+, Athlon 64 3200+ and 3000+ Socket 939 processors will cease to exist December 31st, 2006 leaving the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ as the sole Socket 939 processor available.

I guess it comes as no suprise.

But I thought there was supposed to be a price war starting on the 24th of July? And yet they're putting a number of their CPUs to their death bed.

As sad as it is, I still get a smug glow of satisfaction upon hearing once again that S754 it to outlive S939.

Hi there

Then entire socket 939 single core line up has been axed. They are all now EOL and no longer in production.

AMD X2 S939 will be next to go as AMD are moving all production over to AM2 in order to combat Intel.

I didn't expect socket 939 to be axed so quickly.

In a way, it kind of makes sense now. If the X2 3800+ will drop to £100 on 24th July, then why would anyone consider a 3700+ for around the £110 mark? So I guess they're getting rid of them now and making way for dual core and AM2.

Yep AMD are axing all socket 939 processors. The funny thing is AMD are dropping the prices but many of the price drops are useless as there is no more stock left.

AMD X2 socket 939 processors are already in massive shortage so if AMD do drop the price it may be a waste of time as stock is already running out.....
So I would not be surprised if prices actually shoot up as well actually just like socket A processors did when they were nearly all gone.

gibbo so are you saying if we want an X2 on s939 then we should buy now?

Its a gamble!! Wait a month and you might save yourself a few quid. Or miss out completely.........

I was planning on replacing my dieing Opty 144 with a dual core a64 in the summer.

I might as well wait until next summer now to see what's around. Once Vista is out and relatively updated I think I'll take a look at whats out there

Everything seems abit rushed to me

Afterall AM2 Is just a Socket 939 CPU That can support DDR2 Ram ?

Socket 939 hasnt been out all the long.. and its still fast enought to do everything we want,

I think AMD Are just a little bit out of order by ending production on SKT 939 cpus :(

Since Opteron's share the same SanDiego Core as the 3700 and 4000, I should expect them to have been axed right now as well.

Mul

Seeing as there is a supposed price drop and every likelihood of a shortage of supply will this not in fact force the prices up. This is what has happened with the high end 754 Cpu's right now. Thats even if you cna find them in the first place.

Another giggle at 939 being phased out before 754. :D

Seriously though, i am really surprised that the 939 X2's are being phased out so quickly. They have only been around a year or so. This makes AMD no better than Intel really. It's forcing everyone who wants to upgrade to buy everything new all over again. It's not even as if AM2 is a great deal faster than 939. Ok, it's more power efficient but the performance is'nt there. On top of that, decent low(ish) latency DDR2 is stupidly expensive when compared to far lower latency DDR.

As for the Opty's, are'nt the new server cpu's going to be on yet another socket that has'nt been released yet? Socket F? If so i would have thought the Opty's would be around for a while yet.

Edit**
Here's something i just found on the Inquirer about the new Opty's.

More here from Dailytech.
