End of PC Gaming

err he was talking to people who buys shares in his company.

what is he meant to talk about? lots of development and low prices?

5 words...

PC Gaming is not ending

Sorry, my bad choice of title.
Not ending, but definetly stifled by short term gains.

Biggest/best thing to hit pc gaming was the Valve/Steam model based on user mods and dedicated online game servers.

Which ironically is what Activision want to do away with (within their own titles anyway).

Well his business model affects one of the most anticipated pc titles, so no reason why we the consumer shouldnt pay attention.

Lots of development and low prices?
You mean like Apple when they released decent affordable music downloads?

Prior to Apple we had music industry stalwarts decrying the net was killing the industry whereas the reality was they werent willing to accomodate consumers who wanted to buy their music at a reasonable price in a convenient downloadable format.

We'd still be buying copy protected cd's with no option to put on our mp3 players if they had their way.

So yes, bring on development and low prices.

As long as developers like ID, Valve and up and comers from the Modding industry are around.. then PC gaming will not die.

This guy in the link above is a d***.. Greedy CEO. Its a pity.. but I can't see ppl boycotting MW2 as much as we'd all like... :(

This article has made me not want to buy MW2, I think I will just stick with AC2, Borderlands and Dragon Age this year :)

I'm really considering not gettin MW2.. its been on steam for a few days now and I havent gone for it.

I can live without.. I havent even played cod4...

This arguement has been going on for years. It's a cycle. A new console comes about, takes the spotlight, ages, get eclipsed by the current PC tech and PC's take the spotlight for a while. Rinse and repeat.

PC's will always have a place due to modding communities and the many games that people seem to forget about that are PC-only:

Total War
Galactic Civilisations
Kings Bounty
GTR
R-Factor
Flight Sims
Flashpoint 2
Arma 2
Stalker
etc..

Most of my friends have consoles and apart from the odd title (Little Big Planet) they're welcome to them! Some games do get shafted by developers (MW2) but it's then up to people like us to kick up a stink. And remember, any hole left in the market will be filled by an emerging developer. There's a lot of exciting things coming out of Russia at the moment and they're all PC-Centric.

I agree, tho pc sales wont be good.
I was set to buy it but one of the buying factors was the great online gaming I've had from previous installments of COD.

As it is, I'll get a shot of my nephews xbox version and save the £30/40/60 or whatever whacky pricing they intend using.

Of course you should pay attention to what he is saying but also respect who he is addressing.

The music industry has a larger audience and more flexibility on its overheads. The gaming sector is diluted between various platforms with less flexibility on its overheads. There is much less room to move for publishers making games that are not subscription based than music companies who have to pay an artist a one off lump sum.

Pay madonna £10m to make music that can be sold on a variety of formats from its source material, or give Kojima an undefined amount to make a game which will be released at an undefined point in time...possibly only for one platform whose success you have no influence over....

All of what he said makes sense, it just isnt appealing to you or me as a consumer.

WoW is like Eden because of the margins. But then you look at the revenue of WoW and realise it isnt that huge compared to other large companies. So how do you appeal to your investors? You have to show that there will be a return on capital.

http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/global500/2009/full_list/

look at that list, why would someone want to invest in activision over another tech company?

I also dont believe PC gaming will die, mainly because there are huge margins that could be achieved if a strong competitor emerged to WoW and split the customer base.

lol at title. PC gaming will never end. its not like the games of the past are going to disapear in 2012.

Activision are morons, even EA arnt this moronic(they are close) Alienating part of the market cannot be good for business.

Part of the problem is the press, its like they get back handlers to give good pre/reviews(read OFP2) then the game ends up being a pile of poop or just another rehash of the previous game. COD series is a classic example, the engine is cod2 with bits bolted on and a reskin. Hardly innovative.

The problem with gaming in general is Consoles. They stifle innovation and technology.

PC gaming will always be at the cutting edge of innovation and technology, and this is why it will never die.

it aint the end but we as pc gamers needs 2 hit companys in the pocket etc.. dont buy there stuff :)

Indeed mate.

Hopefully, there will be some exclusive titles for the PC so it can stay alive. PC gaming rocks!

Things change, pc development certainly isn't the cutting edge it was during the 90's through the early turn of the millennia.

Tbh it was allways a niche market, with game budgets as they are now and the way they have to be multiple platform to cover those costs, and the expectation from the user for atleast some quality from the product, the struggle to get a quality AAA to the pc with the kind of innovation we saw in the 90's will be a rare sight:(

Lots of good still in the pc market though. It's just to cut you an example, take papyrus, the iracing team... once developing bleeding edge racing engines in graphical terms to match there wonderfull everything else, what you wouldn't give to have them with an engine on a par with the current racers doing the rounds. Everytime i see that nascar pitlane screenshot from gt5 i drop a small sigh:(

Dieing though, for me, iv'e still got the machine and os to play them on, pc gamming will never die, too many absolutely timeless games with the want to play again factor bolted on.. 10+ years iv'e been playing stuff like rollercoaster tycoon:)

I think it's probably the fact PC hardware keeps evolving, the fact there doesn't seem to be a break at all in developing and releasing hardware, probably makes game developers consider giving up instead of keeping up.

i dont think it makes any difference. with new hardware comes new games engines. games companies decide whether to buy or not. it doesn't make much difference to the developers apart from a new api for the graphics guys.
