End of Windows XP support spells trouble for some

Meanwhile the government throwing your tax money at Microsoft for extended support, and healthcare/finance industries playing fast and loose with your data by running obsolete operating systems appears not to warrant any indignation at all.

Just gone back to W7 Professional x64. It's perfect tbh, everything just works. It's fast and fluid. No annoying Metro, 'Apps' or 'Charms'.. I mean really Apps? Charms.. Way to copy apple and alienate your original typical desktop PC user. They changed what made a PC a PC. I want my desktop to be a desktop not a tablet. MS do seem to be going in the right direction now and listening to their actual user market, but W8 just isn't there yet..

Going to use Windows 7 up until Windows 9. If that is also a bit pants I'll stick with 7 for the long haul.. By then Linux / SteamOS might a viable option for more than just a handful of games..

When you say apps are annoying do you install them just to annoy yourself and remind yourself how annoyed you are?

Myself, I just wouldn't bother using them.

Government does what Government wants. Nothing you can do about it. Plus it didn't stop them years ago when it wasn't obsolete.

It is about time it is completely killed off.

I hope not, I hope the people who cling on to XP get royally screwed over for supporting an OS that is so out of date. The typical home user should be away from XP now no excuses.

Really don't understand this attitude, there is a simple reason my computer is still running XP is that's the OS it came with and it does everything I've ever needed why would I spend the money on a pointless upgrade? MS are now forcing this so begrudgingly I am doing it using windows 7 will gain me little to nothing and drain 70 odd quid from my bank account!

My home laptop is windows 7, work laptop is windows 7 to be upgraded to 8.1 soon, most are my vms are server versions however I do have a GNS lab machine in work running XP, had the message pop up on it today about the support ending

They're not forcing anything . They are just no longer supporting an OS which is well beyond its life expectancy. 11 years is a longer support period than pretty much any physical product will ever receive, would you expect free repairs on an 11 year old car?

Every OS comes to an end, your choice end of the day on what you do, as you know you have plenty of alternatives ie free (Linux)and newer Windows.

I jumped on the £15 and £25 deal for Win8 so got a good investment(free upgrade to Win8.1 and long support) but that won't stop me upgrading to Win9 and 10 down the road (my choice to do so).

£70? I can. see windows 7 pro for about 35-40? Windows 8 should be a decent price.

Only reason I see not to upgrade is if your hardware is not up to make a decent job of it, even with an upgrade.

My Dad still uses XP, got a worried call this morning because he thought he had got it infected with something after the warnings started appearing :(

The problem for him is hes dyslexic and all the support software he uses do not work on 7 or 8. Newer versions of said software would cost him ~£500 (as well as the cost of 7 or 8 licenses)

Only solution I can think of is to start imaging his hard drive so it can be fully recovered whenever something in xp is broken by new unpatched stuff.

They are forcing me to upgrade to stay secure, which I 'm ok with as you say 11 years is a long time to support anything these days what I was annoyed at was people saying they can 't understand why anyone would have not upgraded when there are stacks of good reasons not to have done it until now.

No chance my PC could ever run windows 8!

Windows 7 home premium looks to be about 70 quid from a decent retailer and even if it is 40 quid I need at least another 2gb of ram to make it useable! I've actual spent 159 quid on new processor ram mobo and ssd!

Always Linux for free, bottom line no OS or even hardware lasts forever so eventually you will have to change something.

Your going to have to upgrade sooner or later anyway? look hard enough you could probably pick up a cheap base unit with a half decent dual core and a board that can max out on 8GB RAM that will easily run Windows 7

Reputable seller? I have seen loads of sellers with good feedback and reviews selling for £30-£40 for a Windows 7 Pro x64 COA and Product Key

My brother picked up 2GB ram from a well known bay site,we upgraded my mums XP to Win7 (old P4 Dell PC)for under tenner(we had a retail Win7 already).

Hardware wise not going to cost you much, just need to know where to look online.

Get him off IE if he uses it. A regular backup is a must have.
