Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

It was cheap back in 2001 when we actually used way more electricity than what we use today. It is all driven by profits and greed.

They are all making record profits every year, that should tell you enough and the bonuses given out are huge. They are taking the micky really.. maybe when we have a normal government in power things will change, but for now I am expecting April 1st the joke is going to be on the government with people protesting they can't afford to even live a normal life with these huge bills now and the standing charge increase is just a pure insult now.

Exactly. It all comes down to profits and greed. I wonder how many people who can't afford to live a normal life will be voting Tory again? In a way a lot of people voted for there own poverty time and time again.

French had one approach
But there has been some flak from other quarters, with Mr Le Maire accused of "killing off" the 85% state-owned electricity giant EDF.
EDF is bearing the brunt of the government's intervention, by being forced to sell more of its electricity to competitors at a lower price.
The firm says this will cost it €8bn this year. But Mr Le Maire is unrepentant, saying EDF is a public service and must act in the public interest "to protect the French".

-----------

its not just energy prices going up but everything in general like food, broadband, clothing, water ...

so yes people will be cutting back on remaining discretionary purchases - eating out, fast-food, travel ... has Tiim Martin put up food/drink prices in Weatherspoons.

Will be the final nail in the coffin for the hospitality sector as people have become accustomed to eating at home and will simply not have the money to eat out.

Prices jump to record highs on Russian supply fears
https://www.reuters.com/business/en...ket-volatile-russian-supply-fears-2022-03-04/

"British and Dutch gas prices soared on Friday, with some contracts hitting all-time highs,as market participants continued to fear disruptions to Russian gas supplies to Europe in light of the war in Ukraine.
The British day-ahead gas price rose by 104 pence to 454 pence per therm by 1352 GMT, just shy of its all-time high of 464 p/therm hit on Dec. 21."

There's more misery to come. There's a war going on right now which is only going to escalate. With that, money flocks out of most currencies into the US Dollar for safety. Now most central banks don't want to put interest rates up, however they will have no choice, and I expect to see the markets force the Bank of England to hike rates rather substantially.

I'd be very surprised if there was a significant dip in house values, prices may stagnate in some areas for a while, maybe a dip of 5% or more in some areas but I'd be amazed if it was anything like 20%.

I tend to agree. I'm sure if there's much more of a dip cash buyers will be in to snap stuff up.

It’s a con in respect of electricity generation and costs. I accept gas is a global commodity but how is electricity? It’s generated abs used exclusively in the UK with very little way to “export” or move it around other than a few small interconnectors.

I'd imagine the house prices would go up due to bills going up - landlords will have to increase rent prices.
And I'd have thought that would cause the price of houses to also go up further fuelling inflation.
