Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Do we really need electricity on 24/7? I think it would be more of a case of adapting the new changes. If the price of a candle is cheaper than having a light on for the night then candles could be the answer to lighting and you'd only need them for one room at a time. Food could be cooked outside on a camp fire or on your open fire place if you have one. You can make your own entertainment without electronic gadgets and hand wash your cloths. If its cold outside that be like your fridge. Or you could run the electricity for one or two hours per day for things like heating water and using your washing machine.

Agreed, after i've finished writing and compiling the latest release of our software using paper & pen and an abacus, i'll spend 45 minutes getting a fire ready from the 1 stick/day I've rationed from the available wood in my garden, feed my kids raw food then spend the next 4 hours washing their clothes in a bucket of ice, then shiver under a pile of blankets for a few before eating a few coffee beans and sending the kids to school in their uniform which is still soaking wet because it's been raining all night :D

Exactly. It all comes down to profits and greed. I wonder how many people who can't afford to live a normal life will be voting Tory again? In a way a lot of people voted for there own poverty time and time again.
We have multiple companies all seeking/making profits would it be better for one company(, nationalised) making a profit

Octopus announced they are staying below the price cap for existing customers (albeit only by £50/year). I wonder how long that will last with prices still increasing by the day :s

Don't forget washing once a month rather than daily.

Have you actually tried using candles as lighting, they are rubbish and expensive.

So are they expecting it to go that high or are they just covering themselves with ludicrous fixed pricing?
How are most people going to be able to afford 400 quid a month gas and elec bills!
God knows but it's going to mean I'm spending less of other nice stuff

I have indeed. I live in an old Victorian house and many of the rooms I've restored back to how they would have looked like in the Victorian times and every now and again I like to relax in the candle light. A couple of candles light up a room reasonably well.

Hmmm, got my 14 day cooling off period, so time to think about it. Fixed prices for 24 months.

My bill went from an average of £170 a month, to £280 when I came out of my fixed rate in January. This new fixed rate will take it to £412.

Wrong choice, in your opinions?

Annual estimated usage:

Gas = 19028.37 kWh
Electricity = 5922 kWh

Its hard to know what to do but fixed tariffs are so expensive right now.

  • Due to the events in Ukraine, Cornwall Analysts issued an emergency update of its prediction and is now predicting the rise in October could be a shocking 47%, that would mean it is worth fixing if you can at a price no more than around 25% (was 15%) above April’s price cap.

Thats the current advice from Martin Lewis, I know some people don't respect his advice but personally I think if we are going to have another 50% price rise in October then people will be protesting in the streets and the government will have to do something.

Thank you, it's good to bounce it off someone.

My thinking, which I'm happy to admit to being wrong on, is that I now know the worst case. If I trim our gas and electricity usage, I will pay less. If I rude it out on standard rate, the only way is up from the present £280.

What's the difference between a cooker and an oven?

At one year it would be a hard no from me, two years it really depends on what happens over in Eastern Europe, your crystal ball is as good a mine on that.

For context, I fixed for 2 years in September at 20p/3p which was basically the new cap level and another rise being projected for this April. That fix had no exit fee either.

In the current context of being 50% above the current cap (I assume a hefty exit fee?), I don't think I would do it.

Its hard to know what to do but fixed tariffs are so expensive right now. I probably wouldn't do it right now.

I think his advice is predicated on a normal 1 year fix, two years is just a guess for anyone at the moment.

He is right though. People have gotten to soft. If your unwilling to give up a few unessecary things like heating at lighting on demand you probably wont survive when looters come for your food supplies
