Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Just checked my fixed with E.On and it runs out in June - I am now paying 20.1 kw and 18.58 per day.

Anyone any idea how much this is going to go up and how many jars of Vasline do I need. ?

ps They wouldn't let me check new prices.
Prepare for it more than doubling from those rates.

Price has jumped today to 800 a therm from an all time high of 400 a therm last week.

I'll be very surprised if ofgem don't step in and alter the price cap before October.
In what way?

I sense another "not fixing in march was the wrong advice but we couldn't know in hindsight" coming in September.

Do you think people will tolerate their bills tripling while BP, Shell etc announce record profits?

The government will have to act. People will be dying next winter.

Yes people will be dying. I'm guessing you're expecting a profits raid?
I agree in principle.

However what is to stop BP etc leaving the UK? Genuine question.
If government raid private companies profits when times are tough (I don't disagree).

Sadly the government is quite complacent in letting those on lower incomes suffer, I think when those on middle incomes start to feel the pain then the government will know its in trouble.

It is insane how expensive its going to be this year and I wouldn't be surprised if we have people protesting in the streets, messing with meters and just refusing to pay. Will cause a lot of harm to wider economy as well with people cutting back to the essentials. Could be an argument that you'd do less harm by subsidising energy costs now and pay it back over the decades to come when we have reduced our dependency on oil / gas (or when prices calm down).

The govt will sell it to us like 'this is because of war' 'we cant do anything', they don't care if the plebs suffer.

Ofgem gave themselves new powers at the start of the year to adjust the price cap earlier if needs be.
Most of the remaining utility suppliers are bigger than bulb and would be considered too large to let fall so it the strain of current wholesale prices gets too much it'll get passed on to the customer with a new cap level before October.

Its the standing charge that is criminal. OFGEM are a utter disgrace tbh.

With this prices across the board its going to be interesting going from doing OK to being on the breadline. How a lot of people are going to have to pay for all these increases is madness. Its going to be better off on the dole syndrome again for many people.

Currently playing £160 a month and had a email saying my gas is going up again £500 and electric is £300

How is that even possible? Are you just accepting some crazy inflated fixed price or are you massively behind on your payments?

The average household from April is at around £1900/year. You are doing that in a quarter.

This is what I'm thinking too.

It doesn't matter what you do to your usage habits if you're getting pumped 50p a day for simply having the supply. I was thinking of installing a battery bank to the house to store some of our solar generation but the standing charge is really screwing that plan at the moment.

I assume you mean that's up an extra 500 and 300 a year ? or do you mean you are paying 800 a month moving forward for gas/electric, because that would be mental, that is almost 10K a year on utilities, which is going to be for some people over half of their take home before mortgage / rent or food.

Thing is though time and time again on here i see people complaining about standing charges when their monthly energy bills are £250-300.. £15 of standing charge (5-6% of the bill) should be the least of someones worries if their bills are that high!

As i keep saying, all that cheap gas and elec folks had during the good times is now being paid for in Standing charges as we're all paying for the failed companies that gave everyone the super cheap deals with no reserves of hedging

Thing is can i now justify getting rid of the old plasma TV which is absolutely fine by on the electric cost of running it, Mind you I could just leave it on all the time we all sleep in the living room due to the amount of heat it gives out.
