Engine conversion but not told insurance or DVLA-What to do?

None of these practices being committed by another person would hurt me as an individual. Being involved in an accident with an uninsured driver has the potential to cause me financial harm.
No, it doesn't.

EDIT

Sorry - need to clarify that! Are we talking "uninsured" as in he has not declared mods etc, or uninsured in the true sense of the word - ie he has no insurance policy? Because in the case of the former you would still be compensated.

I'm talking in the sense of modifications not being declared. I have always been under the assumption that a modification not declared would void your insurance policy which would amount to the same as not having insurance at all. Am I wrong then?

Mate, its an engine swap. No-one other than himself and/or the insurance company can possibly lose out from this. If he hits you, you would be compensated, even in the event of invalid insurance 3rd party claims are upheld by the insurance company, and thit is up to them to seek reimbursment from the policyholder.

Yeah, the insurance company are legally bound to pay you out. It's not your fault he has lied or failed to declare details to his company. :)

Maybe this is why my premiums are so high then?

Edit: Maybe I just have a good sense of morals that some of you seem to be missing.

Nope, they needn't be high for this reason as generally speaking the insurance company will sue or otherwise pursue a claim from the policyholder to recoup their losses.

Are they? I am 21 with 6 points and only 1NCB, and yet i can insure a mercedes benz S600 with a 6.0 V12 engine for about £500.

Hardly high? Insurance is almost a non issue when choosing a car once you hit 21 and have a year of NCB behind you.

It'll still affect everyone's premiums to persue legal action though. This is not a victimless crime.

Dont do anything, so he is a **** and is getting away with something dodgy. Its not your place to grass him up.

I'm not a grass and would rather not get invoved but it just ****** me off that he can do this whilst the rest of us part with a lot of cash so we can drive our cars legally.

what? you said he had insurance in the original post. what is the case then?

if he is insured, then read my post above

Ok, insurance companies need to recover the costs from fraudulent policies, this cost money in admin and legal costs. Where do you think the insurance companies get the money from? They pass the cost onto the consumer, that's right, US.

He has insured the car. however, as he hasnt informed the DVLA of the engine conversion they are unaware of the change.
He has modified the car further by fitting alloys, lowering, full exhaust and de-cat.

If he does have a crash the insurance company have to pay out to the third party but will chase him up for not notifying the insurance company about the engine and other mods.

You must be some sort of special case because my premium would be nowhere near that and neither after asking would a lot of members on another forum I frequent.

which they say theyve been doing for years. in a lot of cases theyll pursue the policy holder for the money

at the end of the day, hes taking his own risks.

I would very much like to know where you get insurance that cheap, Im 21 with 2 years no claims bonus and insuring my 1999 2.0 Astra SRI is £900.

Im assuming when he went for his MOT the mechanic guy said he hadnt changed his engine on his MOT certificate?

You can grass him up to the DVLA but you need to sign your letter not just do anonymous letter, they wont look at it otherwise. If the DVLA do think hes dodging it(which in most cases is probably unlikey without significant proof) they can request his car be sent for vehicle inspection.

haha, stop the jealousy because hes ripping you at the lights and forget about it. My mate has done exactly the same with a corsa. Quick little cars with the red top in ;)
