Engine rebuild help

A engine from a yard is a no as i will have same problems, and the cost will be on the same range...
I agree entirely, from a random salvage yard, absolutely no.

But, a reputable specialist is who I'd be talking to, you don't want nor need to be spending ballpark half the value of the car on getting it fixed.

Your money & choice, of course, but don't be blinded by "new engine" it won't be, it'll be rebuilt and alas from experience rebuilt engines can sometimes prove to be short lived.

I'd think long and hard before going down what seems to me to be an overly expensive route.

If you search for p0010 you will find out a lot of people with the same problem on there c class engine. Is a shame that such a big company screw up with the material of the timing gear.
I thought that only the slk 208 and 350 are suffering with the balanced shaft problem. Soft metal on the sprocket.
I have a slk 350 but so far seems to be OK.
Regarding the c class we need badly 2 cars. I decided to go and for the engine rebuild rather then a old engine.

Good. It's not a great car tbh, but you'll have peace of mind of a rebuilt engine. Buying another car for £2k will be riddled with a host of issues. At least with the C Class you know its history - assuming you kept up with repairs along the ownership of the vehicle.

Scrap it or break it and move on or fit a cheap used engine and sell the lot and move on.

Car is worth scrap value in its current state

Engine re-build will be £1000~

Car will then be worth £4000~

Seems like a no brainer to be?

Sell it for £50 and buy a MK1 Focus, or re-build the engine. I know what I'd rather do! :p

If the engine re-build was a £1000, then yes I would agree, but OP has already stated £1800, and that's presumably as long as they don't uncover any other unexpected damage. At half the car's value, it's a bit harder decision.

Even if it was £2k, I dont see how its a hard decision.

You could either scrap the car and spend £2k on a £2k car with unknown issues. Or spend £2k to keep a £4k car with a known history.

I'd have got a used engine from a decent indy (and theres loads of em!) and replaced the weak parts for peace of mind.

a lot of the engine rebuild guys, dont always use genuine parts to rebuild anyway, certainly ive had bottom end rebuilds done and they have used cheap main/big end bearing, theres a lot of rubbish components coming from the eastern bloc.

Yeah i just don't see the sense in rebuilding a 'normal' engine, sure for something specialist like a performance engine or a classic but for how much over the cost of a salvaged engine i just don't see the point.

Wouldn't touch a rebuilt engine with a barge pole tbh. The quality of rebuilt engines on the whole is far lower than a factory built unit, from what I have seen anyway. Go used definitely, unless the engines have some inherent flaw whereby a used one is going to go the same way.

Dont get that rebuilt.

Get a second hand known running engine, have it cleaned and stuff if you must and use that. FAR cheaper.

Why would he be? It's a sound way to recoup money.

1) Scrap the car for £100. You've lost £4k on potentially selling the car if it was working.
2) Spend £1.8k fixing it and sell for £4k. You've recouped money from the sale.

You wouldn't scrap it for a £100, could get a grand on ebay at least I would think as a spare or repair.

It doesn't matter now anyway as OP has gone ahead with a rebuild and fingers crossed it all comes good for him.
