Am I understanding this story right or wrong? The police are threatening to use the law against pub land lords if they cannot prevent crime in their pubs, which is apparently caused by wearing England shirts - or so the Met police say  Anyone else heard about this?

I think it will remain as usual. Around here it's fine if you've been somewhere for a while (i.e. during the match) but to go anywhere afterwards people will probably get turned away.

Will most likely be this. Which I have no problem, a blanket ban on all sports team shirts has been in use for a few years in Sheffield when going around town.

It annoys me though, I should be able to wear what I want, so long as it isn't illegal. Same old story that a few people let us down by being idiots. Most of them being on FB groups such as "If you ban our England tops, I'll poke a Muslim in the eyes with a sausage". I don't see anywhere where Muslims have come in to this debate, have they? Have the Muslim community somewhere said they don't want people to wear England shirts?

Silly FB society.

Its muppets on facebook trying to drum up racism, the last world cup its was nothing but England shirts and promoting anything English in the pubs this is the going to be boom time for pubs so they would never throw out anybody wearing and England shirt unless they kicked off or acting like an idiot.

There was a story in The Sun about the Met Police advising certain pubs in Croydon to not let in people who wear football shirts. Now thanks to Facebook it's "ZOMG COPPERS ARE GOING ROUND PUBS ARRESTING PEOPLE FOR WEARING ENGLAND SHIRTS!!!!!!!"

I'm half tempted to delete everyone who joins these groups from my friends list.

Just had a nosey around my account and people have joined a group called "...It's funny how our flag offends you but our benefits don't!!!...", (customary and slightly ironic English fail is of course present). Situation and taking aboard what The Sun says fails are also present when reading down it.

There are also 350,000 people who have joined. :/

As said you can wear what you want but it doesn't mean that the business has to let you in. Wetherspoons for instance has had a policy of not letting in anyone wearing football tops for years irrespective of the top or whether anyone is even playing on that day. While not all football fans (or even the majority of them) will cause trouble the decision to ban football shirts removes one potential cause of conflict.

I'd hazard a guess that in most pubs you can still wear your football top without being questioned about it.

For years and years, I've understood the rule to be (or it is round 'ere) that you can wear football shirts, any shirt to the pubs showing the game but you won't be allowed in places with shirt on after the football.

Many pubs / clubs have dress codes, on a fair few they say "no football shirts"...

Yeah I can understand that but I don't quite get the whole police side of things with some kind of legal approach. How can a law be enforced on shirt wearing exactly?

I first considered making the thread in GD. Then considered the kind of discussion that would follow in there ;)

As far as I understand it the police are simply offering advice to pubs in Croydon, there is no law about wearing football shirts and no real restriction beyond that which any pub chooses to impose themselves. So the answer is no law is being enforced here because there is none to enforce, it is a suggestion to pubs, I'm sure the police give lots of suggestions and advice to businesses but you won't hear about most of them as they're not as 'newsworthy'.
