Thoughts?

Smalling, Henderson and Carroll not much of a suprise considering I expected him to field a young and untried squad. But Bothroyd? Personally, and this is hard to say as a Toon fan, would have liked to have seen Bent, had a feeling that a Bent/Carrol partnership would work really well.

Now I just hope that after naming a young squad he actually plays them rather than his normal trick of calling up untried players but then playing the exact same team he always does.

Smalling has played how many games for Man U? Same with Gibbs for Arsenal? At least Bothroyd is playing regularly and scoring.

He's not played many, but in those he has played, he has been vastly superior to Evans for united.

Has he shown enough to be considered over the likes of Cahill and Dawson in the england set up?

No.

Mabye he saw him play upfront today and is going to give him a striking birth.

Dawson is still injured, has yet to return to the Spurs squad. I'm surprised there's no Lennon or Huddlestone included as they have both been regularly playing well for Spurs.

Although it's a friendly so a time to test out new names ?

Wow, haven't we seen this before, make excuse for failure, make it youth and no winter break, add loads of younger players for random friendlies no one gives a crap about, leave them all out for the next qualifier.......... complete waste of time.

Pick a team, stick with it, have them get better, try to make them much better than they are(because currently they are crap). What use is an experimental side against France, when the first game in the Euro's will be the same old team, but with less practice and idea's than they could have.

I don't mind them picking Smalling or Henderson. But Bothroyd? Surely other options than him. Carroll, I guess it was coming, but I just can't stand him.

What a ridiculous career Smalling has had though :/

I'd like to see him give a press interview where he explains why he picked the players he did and why he's ignored others.

I swear England managers take back handers to make players internationals to increase their value. Sven blatantly did it to Walcott in 2006

I know there's injuries and whatnot, but of the 30 years iv'e been watching england, i can't ever remember such a weak forward line anounced for an international.

Journeymen having a flash in the pan season season at a lower level, discarded players fabio's going back to, crouch tried and failed time again at the highest level, and carroll.... with a huge question mark. For the atributes he brings to the fore, everything else the guys about needs to improved ten fold, from his technical ability on the pitch to the guys temperament off it.

Young guy though, so he definately deserves every chance to succeed at club and country. My fear though that in the short term, that protective bubble of denial that chris hughton places around him at newcastle might not be there for him in the england setup.

He kicks off, it could be a very short international career.

Would love to see the players you think have succeeded at International level if you're calling Crouch with 21 goals in 41 games a failure.

I can't really explain Crouch, he seems to have no real striker talents, he's tall but not very strong in the air and he can't shoot from anywhere outside the 6 yard box. I'm a Spurs fan too lol
