England Squad Announced

Sure, Bent is probably the better at ensuring the ball goes into the net but he's hopeless without a support structure around him. Holt is happy to drop back into the midfield and hassle players there, contest for balls and win challenges. He is also able to make decent wide runs and get balls into the box for other players. The trouble with so many of our superstar strikers is that they just hang around the top end of the field relying on the the midfield to create the chances.

Plus, I can't see Holt throwing himself on the floor if a player coughs near him.

Also, what's wrong with Crouch? I trust he's just being kept out of this game to allow younger players a chance? His selection for the Euros is a sure thing surely?

our problem, even against the poor teams are goals, i prefer bent purely down to the fact he's likely to convert more chances than he misses compared to a fair few of the others.

and as with rooney, if holt is dropping back we need someone with enough brains about them to replace him up the field, but we don't have the players to work that sort of system, let alone against a decent team, thats the main reason i don't like rooney playing up front on his own, when he moves about he leaves a gap that no one fills.

i hate having to say it (as i hate this part of the modern game), but holt not throwing himself on the floor won't do us any favours, refs miss out on obvious fouls unless people go over :(.

him and crouch have the same problem, both fairly physical players, crouch tends to get done by refs if he jumps for a ball so often its stupid, holt will harress the defenders , they'll fall over clutching there face or go crying to the ref :(.

I am shocked and stunned, truly, to hear that Rooney has failed to recover from his 'throat infection' but will likely be ready to play on Sunday against Spurs :D

If he played up front he'd be fine, he can finish (some of the time) but he can't ever cross, so wasted on the wing.

Exactly, probably the wrong day to be calling him worse than Heskey tbh :o

On Cleverley the good news is that his ankle injury isn't on the same one that Kevin Davies busted up and has subsequently kept him out of action since September. That said if it's true and he is out for another couple of weeks that does suck and heightens my fears that he's a bit of a sicknote (not that he'd get a game ahead of Scholes and Giggs at the moment mind anyway)

I still think he'd get a game ahead of Giggs. I love Giggs but he's very much a luxury player now, he causes us massive shape problems when he plays because he doesn't stay out left, it means Evra doesn't have an option ahead of him and against a team with an attacking right full back (like Johnson for Liverpool a few weeks back) we look very vulnerable on the break.

I meant Giggs in centre midfield, whilst Giggs still has the best delivery from the left of any of our players like you said when he's started out there we often lose shape due to him coming infield. Still not the place to be talking Man Utd here :)

Grant Holt should never be picked for England, He's a worse footballer than Andy Carrol and that is saying something, he is having his season in the sun like so many before him so may get his one England Cap ala Beattie, Jeffers and Kevin Davies he will never ever make the grade. If we are short of strikers the manager should look else where we havea proven international striker in Crouch available and after that I would consider Danny Graham of Swansea and even Rickie Lambert of Southampton before Holt both are much better footballers.
