England Squad Announced

I should mention that I don't think Smalling has the same problem as Jones, he's not as gung-ho and I think he would do a good job.

He only seems to try and do a Cristiano Ronaldo impression when he's at right back and Man Utd are dominating a weaker team, which is fine.

Hart
Walker - Richards - Jones - Cole
Johnson - Parker - Gerrard - Young
Rooney - Sturridge

CB pairing is odd I would agree, But think Richards is good there and Walker is just as good on the wing.
Johnson over Wallcott is a must, And Gerrard has no place on the wing.
Replace Rooney with Welbeck when he is out.

As good as we can get with that squad.

I didn't notice he was in the squad at first, but then again I don't notice him when he's on the pitch either :p

I cannot believe that people are really suggesting to put Richards at CB.

That is not his position. He is has been the best RB in the league this year so stick him at CB where his naivety still as defender can be exposed

As for the rest why did he have to choose Barry and Milner. Could really do with them not playing.

Not sure why Gerrards in this one. He's not back to full fitness, he's been out of the game for an extended period, and it's not as if he hasn't seen him play before.

Bit odd.

It would have been nice to give Grant Holt a try. With Rooney missing the first two, a player like Holt who makes chances, scores goals, is happy to run all over the place and is in incredible form is well needed. He just seems a natural player that could take over from Rooney during his absence. The only difference would be that Holt can score goals.

Holt is a far better player than Bent.

I can see how Ox has been left out. He's a cracking player. However, the 21s have a qualification game that day so it's best to keep decent players in there to secure the win rather than run them out at a non-important friendly.

Cleverley's injured his ankle again as is to be withdrawn, takes the ****

Oliver Holt ‏ @OllieHoltMirror
FA set to announce Tom Cleverley is out of the England squad to play Holland next week. Damaged ankle during Ajax game last night

different types of player tho, i'd still go for bent based on his goal scoring record.

Sure, Bent is probably the better at ensuring the ball goes into the net but he's hopeless without a support structure around him. Holt is happy to drop back into the midfield and hassle players there, contest for balls and win challenges. He is also able to make decent wide runs and get balls into the box for other players. The trouble with so many of our superstar strikers is that they just hang around the top end of the field relying on the the midfield to create the chances.

Plus, I can't see Holt throwing himself on the floor if a player coughs near him.

I just think that he's a natural replacement for Rooney.

Clearly, I've got a bit of a stiffy for Holt. :o

Also, what's wrong with Crouch? I trust he's just being kept out of this game to allow younger players a chance? His selection for the Euros is a sure thing surely?

So Holt is a better goal scorer than Rooney now?

Jesus.

Grant Holt is a thug, nothing more. He's going to be found out soon enough.

I didn't say that he was a better goal scorer . I was saying that at the minute he is in great form and is scoring goals. I'm not saying that Holt should be chosen over Rooney, that would be stupid. But without Rooney being able to play, Holt seems like a natural alternative until Rooney can come back. And who knows, he may actually be good.

Sure, he's not proven on the international stage but surely it's worth a shot?

A thug? What's that got to do with anything?

Unbunch your panties sweetheart.

By saying 'the difference is Holt can score goals' and the only name you'd mentioned being Rooney it appeared that it was a comparison to Rooney.

If that's not what you meant then make it clearer in future.

By him being a thug I refer to the level of talent he has (minimal).
