England Squad

Nothing wrong with Delph being there, nice to see some pace and energy in center mid for once. He hasn't looked out of place when playing for England before, is it because he's not playing for a top team?

Defensively England are screwed. Like everyone else sayiong here, not being picked mon form is it... Kane / Delph / Clyne apart. Not understanding why so many left backs either ?

Where is Ings or Austin, Stones. I can't even complain about Noble and Tomkins not being close either as their form not been great since Christmas (and Tomkins is injured).

Worst thing to appen to Phil Jones was going to Man Utd. I thought he was gonna be great but he has just stood still. Injuries haven't helped I know.

Happens to a lot of youngsters, doing great at a smaller club, move up and it stunts their development.

As a player, he would have benefited so much from a couple of seasons more at Blackburn, playing week in, week out in his best position.

Money talks unfortunately.

If you leave out Jones and Smalling who are you going to replace them with?

Stones could've had a nod, and Woy could've begged Terry who is still the best we have even now.

Woodgate is still better too :p

[edit]Christ, I'd rather we took Shawcross than Jones or Smalling.

It's improved of late at club level but he's shown over years that he's not good enough.

Danny Rose in for Shaw.

As a Southampton fan, I'm disappointed for Bertrand who I'm sure plenty of others would agree has had a better season and is probably a better player anyway.

Strange call up for me.

When he finally got used consistently for England early in his Utd career he was by a margin England's best player. He scored a bunch of goals and assisted the majority of the ones he didn't score over what a 10 game period. It was only as he picked up injuries and then missed months and was used inconsistently at UTd for a couple of years that his form disappeared.

10/11 he had 2 assists in 1 start and 3 sub appearances for England.
11/12 he had 4 goals 5 assists in 5 starts and 3 sub appearances. In the Euro qualifiers he had 4 starts, 1 sub, 3 goals and 4 assists. He was in outstanding form for England. That was his first real run in the team, it was the best England have played in years before and since frankly. However that year he moved to Utd and went from 34 league starts to 19, sub appearances and picking up a few niggling injuries. Don't forget he got 6 goals and 7 assists in 19 starts for Utd. He was significantly better than anyone gives him credit for, both for England and Utd.

12/13 and 13/14 were just significantly injury hit seasons and for Utd he was in and out of the team, no consistent runs between injuries, no form.

Still in 12/13 for england in 6 starts and 1 sub appearance he had 3 goals and 3 assists.

In the only period Young played relatively consistently for England, 2011-2013, he had a fantastic goal/assist record for England against all level of opposition. To make that point in 12/13 he scored in friendlies against Holland/Norway and assisted against Sweden and Belgium.

If Young either at Utd or moving elsewhere can start getting 25-30 starts a season and put injuries behind him he could become one of England's better players again.

I seem to recall Young was one of, if not our worst player at Euro 2012, he was utterly appalling.

Why is Downing not getting a look in? His form has tailed off a little the last couple of months, but I thought he was doing pretty good at West Ham?

i doubt it would go down well on these forums but if Smalling and Jones are able to get in these squads to consistently its a travesty that Shawcross never seems to have any consideration. I'm not saying he's the quality that should be turning out for England but he's a more consistent performer than some of the jokers that are picked every time.

To be fair if by picking some of these trash players Hodgeson's tenure as England boss becomes further shortened then perhaps its not so much of a bad thing.

Couldn't agree more Goodie. How on earth Shawcross isn't in that squad is a real shame. He should be in there on merit not just because smalling/jags/jones are crap

It's nice to the FA and Greg Dyke blame foreigners for the plight of English football again.

Whilst they rather naively ignore...

A) how that must affect the current England squad.

B) England have been comparatively **** at football since the 60s, and foreigners have only been a big part of the English game since the mid 90s.

Instead of trying to make club football worse, why don't you do something a bit more positive Greg. Rather than being preoccupied by how your going to get a return on the enormous stadium.

Maybe the FA could set up a club football team of their own, staffed exclusively by English players. They have the stadium after all. Wembley Rovers?

Even stranger Rose is out but still no call-up for Bertrand. Hey at least Clyne is in :p

We really haven't our international results over that period point to us punching just about our weight it's only in recent times that we have gone down hill fast.

Our team at Italia 90 and in Mexico in 86 was very strong as was the team at Euro 96. We have consistently made the knock out phases of major tournaments and on several occasions been unlucky not to go further it's just for some reason England fans think we are terrible if we don't win the trophy!

Our current side is the worst I can remember the sheer lack of depth in most positions is frightening and some of the first choices are poor.

Its been baffling management decisions that have been our main problem for the past 20 odd years.

Leaving Gazza out of france 98
Playing Scholes out wide so Gerrard and/or Lampard can play ignore the football for 90 minutes every match
Picking Emile Heskey over and over and over and over again,
Picking John Terry as England team captain
Playing a half fit Gareth Barry against one of the finest midfields of a generation in the WC in 2010
Picking David James in goal
Appointing Roy "my record speaks for itself" Hodgson (failed at every high profile job he was appointed)

And on and on and on and on and on for pages and pages of stupid appointments, stupid team selections, baffling tactical decisions...

The England team has been grossly mismanaged in this time, we've paid out tens of millions in salaries to people who are either inept, past it, under qualified or just plain mad.
