England Squad

Michael Keane strikes me as the biggest miss from CB, he's been fantastic this season. Not sure how Trippier is in over Trent either, despite his less impressive recent form. Would also like to see Lamptey get a game although obviously we're flush for full backs

If he plays like 2018 I'd take Trippier over most players - he actually made an effort which is more than can be said for too many of them.

He's just recently finished a 10 week ban for gambling. To not pick Trent because of his form (Of which has improved massively recently) yet pick Trippier who has barely played is just stupid.

Gareth Southgate doesn’t have a nose for performances, tactics, formations or football really, so it’s hardly a surprise when you see tripe like this.

If he plays with a back five it will be a laugh. Especially when most of the players in that squad play with a back 4. We have such a balanced squad now it will be a joke if we do not get into the latter stages of the competition.

6 cbs in the squad, pretty clear what his intention is, what team actually plays good, attractive football with 3 (5) at the back? It's going to be terrible.

I can see why he did it before, he had crap CBs at his disposal, so he thought adding more of them would counter the crapness, but in the end its just adding more crapness to the starting 11. Meh.

He's a defender himself so of course he's going to bias to a position he understands best. He should also know though that defenders generally don't get goals nor help you win penalty shootouts (first time round anyway)

Yes he was a very good defender and I bet he never played in a back 5 so why doesn't he do some coaching and learn to play with 4 at the back

yeah but they're good managers...

I understand that but the point was made that Southgate is defensive bias because he was a defender is just unfounded.

If he plays 5 at the back at the Euro's I expect him to get ravaged for it. I cannot think of a more balanced team since 96. Even our "Golden" generation was weak up top. We have arguably one of the up and coming strongest squads in the world at the moment.

Bin Southgate off and get someone who can talk Jamie Vardy out of retirement!
In one way I agree, but it's too late tbh. 2016 should have seen the spine of the leicester team taken in drinkwater, albrighton and vardy, even simpson (if eligible) but they didn't, Roy had his favourites. And Iceland... well. Shoving him on for sterling when the problem was Kane, then leaving it far too long to bring on Rashford when pace en-masse was needed. Then 2018 comes along and Southgate dabbles with Vardy in the qualifying but can't work out how to use him properly - and without rotating out Kane in some tournament games which it would have needed. So he bottles it, with Kane again going missing in the later games but still being left on, so Vardy rightly calls Southgate and says no thanks. After that even a change at the top probably isn't going to sway him. Is a tournament sensible at his age? Can he sustain that many games in a short length of time? He's still good, but he's realistic about what it takes to stay at his level for the club, and he won't be able to do every game if they come in quick succession. His goals aren't as frequent or fluid as they used to be. A lot come from penalties. Asset? Yes, Better than some of the current squad? Heck yes Sole answer? No. I think we'll struggle with all the injuries across the board at the moment. If Southgate were brave he'd truly pick based on stats. Unless anyone has some stats I've not seen, that would presumably rule out Dier.
