England V India ***Clash of the Heavyweights*** Test, T20 and ODI Series

Well that's what I'm getting at, I'm not sure you can say they deserve to be number one based on a specific 11 playing, and when they fail it's OK because Zaheer or whoever was missing and they're really still number one. You need to perform over time to be number one and the excuse of our best player being missing doesn't cut it in that respect. To be number one you need to be able to do without a player or two in my view.

Coming back to this point, no Zaheer, Sehwag, Gambhir injured, Tendulkar can't bat till later, it's fairly likely that Dhoni will be missing the Trent Bridge test.

Of course, you should be able to cover for losing a key player, but when you could be losing up to 4 or 5 of your key players, who were the ones to get you to the number 1 position, then it's simply not going to be the same. I'm not making an excuse, it's just very unlucky for India :(

India played like England used to. Getting in a good spot but then failing to capitalise and ultimately letting the game slip away.

Nope. India play well, then play awfully, then let themselves back into the match only to fail again.

Other examples of this that spring to mind:

South Africa V India 3rd Test
India V England ODI world cup
India V South Africa ODI world cup

It's too sad to happen regularly :(

I wonder what excuses The Centurion will come out with this time.

Well done England, completely outplayed India in all aspects!

Let's be serious eh? India missing the key batsman and bowler, and in the 2nd innings had to reshuffle their batting order because one was injured and the other was ill. In all honesty, I'm very proud that India held out for so long. It would have been a surprise for England not to win.

In terms of today's play, most of the time, they weren't great wickets. Just horrible mistakes from batsmen. Dravid played at one that he shouldn't have, so did Dhoni, possible Harbhajan too. Laxman just popped it up nicely in the air to gift his wicket again. Gambhir got a good ball, so did Sachin and Kumar.

Honestly I thought Tremlett bowled well, but for me the other bowlers were pretty average.

However, I think that England outplayed India on every single day. I think that India's downfall was just all the mistakes that they made, just too many of them.

Not happy at the moment, not happy at all right now :(

Come off it. Broad bowled brilliantly throughout the game and whilst Anderson wasn't at his very best, he still got a fivefer. If India had batted first, England's bowlers would have made a right mess of India's batting lineup.

The reason they made those mistakes was down to one thing - building pressure, from bowling good lines and lengths. Batsmen like Dravid don't hang their bat out at a ball like that unless someone has been bowling well!

I thought broad bowled well in the first innings, but not in the 2nd. About 20 odd times, I called whether he'd bowl it full or short and I was right nearly all the time.

I agree with you that India would have been absolutely raped if they had been put into bat.

Honestly I thought tremlett was the best bowler. It looked like the other two Pacers generated some play-and-miss, but in reality they were just leaves. With tremlett, the extra bounce he got genuinely troubled the batsmen, even tendulkar at times.

Yes, while England played better, surely you can see that victory was made significantly easier for them with the loss of two players and injury/illness to two others?
regarding those problems: sehwag's was unlucky and is a chronic problem, but India had the opportunity to cover for it with mukund, who came in and did a good job IMO. With zaheer, that was a huge blow, but was down to poor preparation and organization, leaving India with 3 frontline bowlers. With gambhir and sachin, that was very unlucky and couldn't have been planned for, so in the circumstances they covered pretty well. And for gambhir tto come in and play as he did shows what a soldier he is. Well played to him.

Don't get me wrong, England was the better team each and every day, but they got some assistance along the way.

England waiting till tomorrow to decide if Tremlett is fit enough to play. Would be a great shame if he missed out. I think that he was troubling the batsmen more than the other bowlers.

Zaheer is ruled out of the 2nd test :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Wicked, an excuse for if we lose.

How about Trott is ruled out of the match, KP gets injured and Cook gets ill, forcing you to open with Strauss and Bell, and changing your batting order round completely? Also Anderson injures himself in the first innings so Strauss needs to come on to bowl as the 3rd seamer. Then to get something from the match would be exceptional.

Can't say im sad:p Who is his replacement?

Munaf Patel or Sreesanth.

Munaf is very tight, but might not take wickets. Sreesanth will get bent over and buttraped without lubrication, going at over 4 an over, but will produce 2-3 magic wicket taking balls.

It's real dilemma :(

FFS Not happy at all.

One cricinfo writer made an extremely pertinent point: 'Without Zaheer, India simply cannot be considered the number 1 team'

This is absolutely gutting for me, I'm literally dying inside.

Probably Sreesanth - he will still be on a high from high-fiving TheCenturion :)

Haha, he looked pretty angry, I've got a photo, I'll upload it now.

Is Zaheer's replacement the only change India will make TheCenturion? I'd read rumours of swapping out Harbhajan for Mishra and Gambhir (if still injured) for Yuvraj.

I'd hope that Zaheer's replacement is the only one. Harbhajan will not be dropped I can assure you that. I'm not sure on Gambhir - if he's fit he'll play he fortunately only suffered bruising so I think he should play :)

Gambhir out injured, not good news but at least Ishant is striking early in the absence of Zaheer.

I'd hope for a draw this match, but this pitch will probably give a result so I can only hope that India wins with this alien batting lineup.

Boundaries coming for England with ease now. Not good signs. Maybe some spin from Yuvraj or Harbhajan in the next few overs?

And Alpherah - I've come up with a good theory about DRS, I'll post it here to be critiqued, it's not perfect but if you follow it properly then it'll make sense.
