England vs Eqypt - **Spoilers**

Not even as a back up striker with probably the best goals to games/mins on pitch ratio than any other current England player?

You see I know he has a habit of scoring (against **** International side's I'd like to say :p) But I'd rather take a better footballer then him, I just don't rate him at all, and don't understand why others do.

I'm not sure about Carrick for England, his passing is probably the best in the squad, but he doesn't have that much else to his game :(

Only speaking from an England perspective, it's probably because he scores and as I said that's all you want:)

yea they always look rubbish on paper.. until we struggle to do anything, throw crouch on and get a result.

then you look back and say, egypt? they're a rubbish outfit...look crouch scored 2 goals against terrible opposition again...but then you realise that we were losing and doing pretty badly till he banged the first one in. good finish btw.

I just think that England have better footballers that could play up top. I know Crouch scores, but I couldn't see him doing that against a better International side.

Egpyt aren't a bad side, but they're not amazing either. I thought England were lucky to get a 3-1 win tonight, really out played in the first half. England were better in the second though.

Gerrard, why oh why does he start? He did nothing tonight. I'd have much rather seen a natural winger start, same goes for Walcott.

Losing 1-0 to Portugal in the WCF and getting outplayed, bring Crouch on for the last 15mins and he scores 2 headers battering their midget defenders on both occasions and we win 1-2.
Bothered.

Walcott and Gerrard were both rubbish imo. Hope Lennon is fit for WC for the right and Milner should start on the left.

No idea what the keeper was doing @ SWP's goal, no need to go to ground from the initial shot and the goal should have been a simple catch or tip over the bar at a push but for some reason keeper drifted to his right and made it hard for himself.

Just got back from the match - walcott was pretty bad and has played himself out of a place on the plane to SA - SWP on the other hand looks like hes going.

Was hilarious JT getting booed by everybody - deservedly so. Atmosphere was pretty rubbish though considering the 80,000 odd crowd - the egypt fans added some spice to the ocassion.

On the whole - still think England are way off winning the world cup - they need to do a lot more to even get out of the group stages.

if someone told Gerrard to stay left, which he's somewhat doing now, but still entirely zero threat down the left because he won't stay far enough out to the left. I can't remember a single attack down the left involving him so far.

I agree 100%!! Gerrard never played a decent ball to Rooney or Defoe all night (those several which said two fumbled were rubbish). I have a better idea, why not drop Gerrard from the squad completely, he's obviously useless and far past his best.

Calling someone of Gerrard's ability useless is a bit :o

At international level he's generally poor though. (although his scoring record is reasonably good)

Pretty pleased about today.

Finally worked a way to get 5 Live through the amp while watching it on TV so don't have to listen to the *&^% ITV coverage ever again.

Game was alright too. :p

Indeed.

He's just not being doing it at international level recently, and imo, no longer warrents his place in the starting 11, I'd much rather see two natural wide men.

Baines - Had a solid performance at LB but didn't look confident at going forward, pretty much passed the ball sideways all the time. Deliveries into the box were not that good either.

Gerrard - Only trick appears to be running at defenders with very little ability to take the ball around them in a controlled manner. Run at defence, hope someone sticks a leg out and make a meal of it, rinse and repeat...

Milner played 10 times better than Gerrard, held the ball up well.

Lampard - Awful in front of goal tonight, didn't see/feel any impact from him either.

Walcott - Woeful, SWP played much better off Wes Brown. SWP has better understanding of good position and makes good runs on the turn to peal from defenders.

I love how people think SWP was great because a daft keeper let his awful shot in and he made a poor choice to cross to someone who was so obviously offside, apart from that he lost the ball constantly, made no good high crosses to anyone in the box, wing play was abysmal, got caught on the ball constantly and showed how being so small he simply couldn't stand up to any pressure what so ever.

Crouch, scored a couple easy finishes, meh, good on him, he's still fairly poor. The defence was very poor and it wasn't Crouch's ability that changed the game, neither SWP's, but a switch to having rather than Defoe on his own against 4 defenders with Gerrard failing to get in to support the strikers really even once in the first half. TO a 4-4-2, with the 4 defenders now marking two strikers, finally a midfield run deep into the box by Barry and Gerrard getting almost the furthest forward he'd been all night. I'd take Crouch over Heskey, without question, but thats not saying much. Carlton Cole is a better, stronger player than both who'll win more headers, score more goals, and set up more chances for others, he's simply a better player.

Is it that surprising that a ickle Defoe on his own with no service, didn't work as well as 3-4 England players in the box on the break.

Both those goals would have been slotted in by the majority of our strikers, Heskey would even have got the second one, it was the formation and style of play that changed it, not the individual players. Milner offered hugely more movement, accurate passing, willingness to get foward and run the wing than Gerrard though, he was an instant improvement.

We need to drop Gerrard, play Lampard in his best role and get a real DM in to play alongside him, playing Lampard and Barry, and Barry being the one to get in the box more(in a 4-4-2, like the second half) happens because Barry is so poor at tracking runs into our box. A real DM there and Lampard could do what he does best, added with some real wingers, over 5'5, who aren't woeful, and we could have a pretty decent chance. Young and Milner on the wings would give us pace, defensive cover(Young and Milner work incredibly hard defensively). Without Beckham on the field Young would be a very good corner/freekick man.

Baines looked a lot less nervous second half, but also was under far less pressure, Egypt were clearly very tired from 35mins in onwards, it was criminal how Egypt put no effort down their right wing against Baines on his own for the majority of the 2nd half, but really speaks to quite how crap they actually are.

Almost every African team got spanked, mostly by very poor opposition, Bosnia, Serbia, South Korea.

I'd take Crouch to the World Cup, probably in place of someone like Carlton Cole. Although Crouch is not popular by any means he does have a habit of scoring goals for England, 20 goals in 37 appearances isn't a bad return, especially as I'm thinking a fair few of them have come from sub appearances. He's not the best footballer in my opinion, Defoe and Rooney are far better individuals but he does seem to be in the right place at the right time when he plays International football.
