England vs Spain

We were lucky to win with the set piece goal because we created hardly anything in open play. Our defense deserves praise but 90mins of hoofing it to Bent/Welbeck and giving the ball straight back to Spain is not good football.

If we had played open attacking football we would've been slaughtered.

Yep, that's the way we had to play today. We can't kid ourselves into thinking we're even close to the level of Spain though; we could play the same game another 10 times and defend just as well and end up losing every time.

When playing the best team in the world you are not going to be bossing the game, pinning them back in their own third and creating chance after chance. What England needed to do today as be solid at the back, keep a clean sheet and nick a goal, which is exactly what they did. This was exactly the sort of thing Capello was brought in for, not the prettiest football in the world but 1-0, job done. The sort of lacklustre attacking performance that had it been against any other team people would have bleated 'hahaha if they play like that against top sides like Spain they will get slaughtered'

Well done England.

edit: didn't think the commentators gave Parker enough credit for that tackle in the box last 10mins, Townsend was too busy slagging off Fabregas for not shooting from a wide angle.

Perhaps they can go into a big quarter/semi final now at a competitive championship and play the same way (i.e. to win). Worked for Italy many a time. Less three lions heart (and attempts at fluid attacking play), more tactics/winning ugly.

Well I didn't mean we should throw everyone forward but we could have at least held onto the ball better and shown some more patience in possession, the long balls were a complete waste 90% of the time, why give the ball to the worlds best team so easily when you can make them work for it?

couldn't agree more.

They could have put a few away. But still,

Start from the back and build from there.

Well played England.

Spain never really looked interested in the game.. maybe nearer the end with the fabregas 2 chances I saw a bit of urgency but mainly it was sluggish for their standards, they were pretty much stuck in 2nd gear i thought throughout the game, thought England played well though.

What is interesting is that Capello has already said Terry is playing on Tuesday, which means he'll have to bench one of Jagielka/Lescott. Some might argue there is a case for letting them play another game together against a different sort of striker (Ibrahimovic) and see how that goes.

Aye. I don't know how Terry would play now. And especially with Ferdinand?

Even if he did or didn't whatever etc.
