English League Football [8th - 12th May 2010] **spoilers**

We failed to retain the league title not because of single bad decisions during the season but because we relied on a single striker who was even still playing injured ahead of a £30m rated Berbatov. It really doesn't say much for Ferguson's faith in Berbatov if he was willing to risk Rooney multiple times instead of playing him. We simply couldn't find enough goals in the team when it mattered when Rooney was out. If I have to choose a single game that would have resulted in us in retaining the title it was the Blackburn 0-0 utter *******s match. Business end of the season, 3 points are an absolute must and we couldn't score a single goal. Pathetic.

The Burnley result, the..........the............ there was more than just Blackburn but to be fair Chelsea had some shockers as well.

Chelsea lost silly games we did as well, it was one of those that was very close and Chelsea won by a point :/ **** happens.

We should have beat them at OT, that was the chance, all the other freak results combined we could have won it there and then.

Yeah but at the business end when results seem to be more crucial as there are less games to make up any deficit, that Blackburn game was the one that stood out to me. It highlighted more than anything how Berbatov just doesn't perform for us when the going gets tough. It was in our hands at that stage, we only have ourselves to blame.

I personally think thats wrong - as they have played fantastically well at home this season (but especially this year)

Personally still put the loss to the match at Stamford Bridge - with that wholly unjustified free kick against Fletcher's more than reasonable tackle - not to mention Rooney leaving their defence for dead (while being onside) and one on one with Cech

Its the "6-pointers" that really count imo - even a draw (instead of the loss "given") would have won Utd the league, despite us deserving the win

Obviously with hindsight Blackburn is actually where Utd lost the title, but a draw was a good result there compared to Arsenal and Chelsea's loss on the same ground

I totally understand where you are coming from - and partially agree.

All I would say is that any time we are wholly relying on Berbatov things arent fully in our hands (they should be, but plainly arent)

berbatovs face when he headed from close range over the bar against stoke was just classic, what ever he did the ball just wont go in the net.

At least he sees the funny side of it, I'd be more worried if he had looked all dejected and that

I was away for the weekend with the family (~25 people from the Leeds area). I'm pretty much recovered from the festivities now.

I used to think Berbatov was unlucky and was actually a quality player having a hard time. I don't know anymore, it seems just as likely that he's just not good enough for a club like Man Utd and needs to move back to somewhere like Spurs etc.

You never know. This is just the latest (but one of the biggest) strides back to that level. First need to establish at Championship level again then kick on from that. Can't take anything for granted. Wednesday, Norwich, Southampton and Charlton all testament to that.

The parachute payments that relegated teams now get from the Premier League, can anyone shed light on what these payments are exactly. Is it payment owed to them for competing in the league but paid in instalments, or is this another payment on top of tv money?

It seems to be payments from seasons they are not competing in the Premiership, so the money is taken from the Prem pot and paid to teams in lower leagues.

The £48m is split over 4 years, as opposed to £32m over 2 years, so the total amount has gone up but the annual sum will be less per season per club. Obviously there will be inconsistencies where a club has been relegated and them re-promoted within 3 years, for example.

[edit]It may be money from TV rights but that would just be how it is financed, the package is called a solidarity package and is 'help' from the Prem to the Football League, as I see it.
