English League Football ** spoilers ** [13th - 16th August 2010]

3 shots on target from Newcastle, 10 from Man U!

Nope, not far from the end it was 10 shots to 7, 4 shots to 3 on target, both in Utd's favour, however obviously 3 goals from 4 on target for Utd and no goals for 3 shots on target for Newcastle, though 2 of those at least were about 30 yards out not very hard, right down the middle on the ground and stupidly easy for VDS to "save", or pick up really.

Scholes was truly outstanding, I remember so much last season and the one before loads of Utd fans(and others) saying Scholes wasn't playing very well, he's well past it, Scholes passing was at his very best today, but he was great last season aswell.

He really was just superb today, it wasn't so much his passing, which was excellent, it was his awareness. Getting the ball and knowing someone was coming in he'd turn away from the danger with his first touch, where other people would lose the ball or pass back to a defender/goalie, he was turning into so much space and time he could start an attack and pick out a great pass.

The chip to Giggs for the 3rd was just fantastic, he got the ball looking to his right and Giggs was well behind Scholes for most of the move, but Giggs made the run, Scholes saw it, put in quite literally the perfect ball though not the best shot from Giggs. Good shot but Harper, you see on the replay he didn't even dive to his left till well after the ball hit the ground, slowest reaction ever, probably would have saved it with a quick reaction.

Berbatov was great throughout, controlled it well, got a goal, deserved another couple, was very unlucky with a couple very nice moves and the interplay and movement between Berb/Scholes was truly fantastic.

Are Newcastle trying to win comedy awards? I'm not sure what's funnier Barton's "I've taped this on in the dressing room" moustache or Carroll's "I'm Argentinian" haircut. :D

I said there must be some kind of competition on about a 20 seconds before commentator said some/all of them agreed not to shave till they won their first game, Carol with the tache of a 12year old, Barton looking more criminal. Could be very funny if they don't win all season.

I was screaming when Berba missed the sitter, that was a Rooney assist waiting to happen :( 6 POINTS HE COST ME, MOTHER******!!!1!11!1

You're wrong, and I'm not going to spend my time telling you why you are wrong.

You obviously made that post to provoke people.

Manchester United fans sing plenty, Newcastle fans are just really, really loud ****** :p

With regard to the game, decent performance, wish Berbatov could have got a hat-trick but nevermind :(

I never made the post "to provoke people" simply an observation, 99% of the time i pay little attention to what goes on in the premiership, only watched tonight as it was the only thing on TV while i had my dinner....

And my observation was that the fans did sod all the entire match

I'm shocked to say it but DM summed up Scholes perfectly. He may not have the legs to play like that against the very best teams any more, but he's still streets ahead of most midfielders around. After the first ten minutes Newcastle never got tight enough to him.

Berbatov is looking much, much better this season. Getting in some good positions and should comfortably get 15 or more goals in the league this season.

Scholes is quality when he gets the time and space. So is Carrick though, he would have dominated the game as well, although obviously he doesn't quite have the range of passing as Scholes, he still dominates the poor teams if they don't close him down.

I don't really think it's fair to judge an atmosophere on what you're hearing on your TV. Personally they came across fine to me today, lots of actual "songs" (not just mindless noise) and in general a decent level of support. Of course there were times when the NU fans were heard - they are a passionate bunch who were determined to voice their insults/abuse and kudos to them, they did.
Still, everyone knows that a fair percentage of those at Old Trafford arn't your die hard locals, the kind you see screaming obcenaties and hand gestures. If the trade off is a quieter ground, then thats fine by me.
And of course it's difficult to get too excited about winning one match when we have been so spoiled.
Anyway, come a tricky CL match at Old Trafford, when the chips are down and time after time the place is amazing. Thats when it really counts :)

Nope, Berbatov was EXACTLY that good every year at Utd, and in the league, the difference is he's played games recently and isn't being dropped every other game and being played as a lone striker, his touch, control movement is all brilliant. He's only not as good when there isn't someone like Scholes to play with, because Fletcher/Carrick/Anderson are laughably awful compared to Scholes in that regard.

Frankly people were just looking at his goal tally(same as his best years in the league) and going "Rooney's scoring more, Berb is crap", then when he plays alongside the Rooney who played tonight, people think he's brilliant.

Nope, Scholes's brilliant quality CREATES the space in the way he plays, he can create that space against Barca, or Bristol. Carrick isn't that good, he can only play well when completely unpressured on the ball and even then his vission isn't anywhere near as good, he's ok with a basic throughball but spraying it out wide, chipping it over a defence inch perfect, its not his game, he's no where near Schole's quality.

I think the difference is summed up as, Scholes looks comftable no matter how much pressure is on him, Carrick, have your grandmother close him down and he turns into a panicky back passing idiot.

Fabregas is the same, and the reason they are two of the most effective central midfielders ever to play in the league, they see danger and turn away from it, neither are even close to fast players, both fairly slow, but their brains are 10 yards sharper than 99% of the players in the league and thats how they get to balls first, make the passes and run out of danger so easily.

I never saw the game, so correct me but:

ESPN and BBC Coms both say that Scholes tackle on Nolan was the same as / worse then Coles the other day and only got a yellow, "because its scholes!"
Consistency please :(

Not really.

It was a bad tackle but it wasn't as bad as Cole's (although neither intended any harm and both should have been yellow's imo)

It wasn't even close, firstly Scholes was on the ground, Nolan jumped over him, little to no contact, Scholes was always on the ground and while it wasn't brilliant, the worst that was going to happen was Nolans feet getting hit.

Cole jumped way off the floor in a reckless manor, they weren't even close to similar tackles, Scholes was a harsh yellow that mostly would rarely get a card, first half first 30 mins, almost never, last 10 mins, yellow most often, and no that isn't a fair way to do it.

Coles was completely reckless and stupid, Henry got a yellow for doing something similar except while he jumped way off the floor and had studs showing, he also jumped CLEARLY 2-3metres infront of the player, only going for the ball with absolutely no chance of making contact with the player, the difference was Cole's was always going to hit the player, and it wasn't going to be very pretty, its a red most times, and a "strong" yellow any other time.

Cole's wasn't a red, and Scholes' wasn't even near a red.

Scholes is simply a fantastic player, he just strolls around pinging passes, as long as he has someone hard working or with a little pace next to him (Fletcher) it overturns the fact that he's slow. He could easily play another season, if he doesn't get injured in that time.

Nolan and Routledge couldn't do anything right.

Carroll was winning a lot of headers but for what? there was no one to get on them and he should have opened the scoring. But I thought he was our best player really.

Not a bad 30mins, but Scholes was quality tonight... is he getting better?

We need to get our home results, any points away will be nice.

Routledge is literally the same player as Walcott, peaked too early, and has a short passing/speed to his game, and that's it. I'm not sure ont hat Caroll either, won a few headers, but that's all he did, win them, no direction or anything. Should have scored from that corner (iirc?) too.

comfortable. I wish for once we'd really try and score a lot, we could have doubled that easily tonight. We always seem to ease of once we get a cushion.

we seem to thrash one team once a season, and never do it again - its really annoying (and concerning)

As you said, it could easily have been 6+ last night with a little bit more effort / accuracy (Berba was well placed for 3+, Rooney a deuce - not incl the assist for Fletcher - not to mention Hernandez /Valencia /Nani all having good chances)

I was really expecting a goal back for Newcastle in the 2nd half considering how many decent chances they had when Man Utd should have killed them off already

Still - we got the three points, and now we have a run of bogey teams coming up for several games , Fulham (a), Wesh Ham (h), Everton (a), Liverpool (h) - stuff of nightmares if you ask me (WH shouldnt be too bad but its not too long ago they did the double over us after Tevez/Masch left WH)
