I find it worrying that 13 years ago I can remember hearing this on radio 1 (Mark Lamarr Show I think?) and the band soaking up all the hype for being the best new/indie/unsigned band out there - no prizes for guessing who it is. Now we see bands like Enter Shikari soaking up the hype... there really isn't much of a contest between the two.
The rave about Enter Shikari really annoys me, and how some people can claim them to be one of the greatest bands ever is beyond belief.
Another thing that this thread has reminded me of is how so many bands these days seem to be obsessed with not going 'mainstream' and not 'selling out'. Everyone seems to be obsessed with this mythical Punk rule that actually being a good band and getting a record deal with some cash is the enemy. You never saw The Sex Pistols being ******* anti-record label, they were in it to make music and be the biggest and best band in the world.
Music is once again becoming dominated by those who come from wealthy enough backgrounds to start a band in the first place, I don't know any of the band members from Enter Shikari, but I would bet my life they come from privileged backgrounds. Sure, being in the position The Sex Pistols found themselves in really isn't somewhere you want to be - living on the streets, no money, no jobs, no education, 'no future' - but it sure as hell fuels that drive to make something of yourself and has produced some great music along the way.
