Entry Level Gaming Rig

Good evening,

Im looking at getting a new rig for a family friend. They play world of tanks and things around that nature.

They have a budget of around 500-£650. I have put a rig together using a 12100F i3 and an RX6600. I am wondering what other specs anybody else can come up with.

I only need system only, no peripherals needed.

To be honest your right on the money with the 12100f and 6600 , case, psu, memory, etc is about £650.

Tempted to look at 2nd hand.. Quite a bit out there, with peopke selling bit in anticipation of new gen hardware.. Brand new 6600 card £280/£300 ish by look.. Saw pc centric do a build, he put in a 2nd hand 6700xt for £350 etc.. Check MM, you have enough posts

ryzen 5600 + b450 combo may work out cheaper than the 12100f combo and provide better performance

why seems like PC parts fail early or just last forever.
still using a 4670k and a 980ti here daily gaming since I bought them.
2013cpu and 2015 gpu? never changed the past on my CPU either and it's still around the same temps as when it was built.

Parts fail anytine, building for somone else as long as there pre paired to take the risk buying used with no warranty then fine some great performance can be had but many a friendship been tested if things go wrong.

probably worth explaining the risk vs benefits of buying used and seeing if they are happy to take the risk of used components but have better performance
that way there is no comeback from them if something breaks

Personally, I'd suggest they buy from a local PC shop. They'll likely get older and more expensive hardware, but support won't be your problem.

OP: 12100F is a good choice, particularly if you can get a cheap H610 or B660 board when the deals come up. It would be a squeeze to fit in a 6600 at that budget though:

You could go for the 10400F, similar price and more choice of boards, e.g. MS B560-A Pro for just over £90. But, would be stuck on a dead platform.

Cheers for the replies guys, If it was for a direct family member I would have looked 2nd hand for sure. However as its a family member of a family member, I opted for all new. Ive gone with the below.

Are there any other HDD's you will be adding to the machine that you already have? Even if its rotating ferrous.

You can't inflict a 500mb size sole hard drive onto someone. You just can't do that.

But I can't see anywhere you can squeeze to fit in the extra £33 and stay under £600.

There is a b grade 1tb m.2 @ £70 :

Yes this was one issue, i do have a Samsung 860 SSD which ill pop in as well, its only 256gb. Ill explain it may need more storage sooner rather than later.

if you building yourself, you can get a 1tb SN570 for £72 easily enough. pciegen3 so can take advantage of Directstorage to in games

You can buy a h610 motherboard and a 12100f for £141 right now....have you placed the order?

Swap the sata ssd for an nvme. £48 for a 500gb sata ssd is terrible value, 1TB go on offer all the time for about £60 for a much superior MX500.

Would have definitely spent the extra on a better psu too, for not much more you could have had a far superior/more reliable psu.

There might be a value in buying everything from one place when building for a friend. If you end up in an RMA situation it lessens the likely hood of blame vs other components and rejected RMA. It also gives you a potential option of telling the user to call OCUK themselves rather than onus on friend to take responsibility for all things diagnostic.

Which to be honest, the OP may as well do if warranty is a concern, 11400f/3060 builds for £650 all the time etc, leaving them with a better cpu and gpu too. That entire build posted above is below average for the money paid.

that psu is fine for the job.

i've got one in my backup pc powering a 3700x and 1070ti no issues even at full tilt for hours at a time. (bought b-grade no less lol!)
it's a reasonable compromise.

To be honest after I posted the original question, they told me they wanted it below £600 and had to include a WiFi option. I could have saved some money getting parts from different places but I plan to build it, hand over the invoices and hope to never see it again. As far as I'm concerned, I couldnt get a pre-built similar spec PC for anywhere near the price.
