Entry Level Satnav

Post codes don't change position no matter what satnav you use though.

Yes i know that, the TOMTOM software doesnt pinpoint them though, I can give you lots of examples of the differences in how the machines portray the locations of postcodes.

One example in particular is over a mile out on Tomtom machines.

Garmin says "yes this is the location of this postcode"
Tomtom says "the postcode is on this road somewhere
and thats a big difference.

but surely some roads are pretty damn long and have the same post code all the way up? meaning the tomtom or garmin will still have to rely on the house number to get a more exact position on that road

my road for example is about a mile long yet the post code remains the same on the entire road but has 400-odd houses on it. I bet the garmin will still just point somewhere randomly on the road as the tom tom will without giving it a house number

I use Tom Tom Navigator 6 on my PDA with a cheap £30 bluetooth gps receiver that uses the SiRFstar III chipset (i think the same chipset as in some of the tomtom's) and it works greats.

But my postcode is "on this road somewhere" though. It's nowhere near my house and my house doesn't have a number so I can't enter it.

I beg to differ. My entire village of about 150 houses and the one beside us also have the same postcode.

Your not on about just the first bit are you?

Ie;

MK2 = Blethley town centre/West bletchely
MK2 2QG = Just a small shopping park with 6 addresses on that postcode

No it doesnt.

The entire village will not be say, NG34 7RP.
It will be broken down into NG34 7RS, gt, ef, etc etc etc.
Even spanby, a village of two streets 14 houses and no road names has 2 different postcodes.

ah i didnt know that, just presumed all the road had the same code

lol i feel like a n00b now :)

well eitherway, tomtom navigator 6 on my pda points to the right part of the road for my postcode

Well you can't enter the smaller region onto the satnav, I don't know the smaller region my house is in.

So that is irrelevant.

Not really as most of them should do a full 8 digit postcode

I know the TT's do

So hardly irrelevant just because you don't know your postcode

So you are telling me that my postcode (never been seen on letters) is not

AA1 1AA,bb

Because I never knew those bb letters existed.

EDIT: I would be greatful to find out where i can find out the missing letters of my postcode.

Ahh nevermind then he would have meant

NG34 7PR
NG34 7GT
NG34 7RS

There are 82 matching addresses.

(OK so I don't know how many houses are in my village. Whole village has the same postcode though!) Google maps says the distance from my house to my postcode is 0.5miles.

fair enough i've only ever known there to be 20 odd even when living in london

another one to check out is navman s50 - really nice wee job. Got one at xmas for my Dad and its a nice simple interface, bluetooth handsfree calling, speed camera database etc etc. Everything you would need for a good start gps. It was recommended to me on here and its well good job so far. Currently going for £135 with free delivery on another well known (jungle) site.
