I had a EOS400D but sold it all a while ago (didn't have use of it at the time).

Now I want a DSLR again....which one to go for as an entry level SLR?

450d by a country mile, the D60 is in dire need of updating now, the 450D has:

Better focusing
CMOS rather than CCD so far better in low light
Bigger screen
Live view
Works with all lenses rather than about 5% like the nikon
Much better interface, less clunky menus and more buttons to press.
Ability to have a wired remote as well as the IR one

The d60 has over the 450D:

.......nothing other than price.

Tom.

PS this isn't because i'm biased towards a brand, if you'dve said "ive got a grand what camera" it'd be a d300 all day every day over the 50D.

Perhaps consider the D40 rather then the D60. Reviews of the latter indicate over-saturated jpeg images, and very little difference between the two except for resolution. D40 also handles low light better due to the lower pixel density.

If you can afford the 450D, it spanks both the Nikons in resolution and features.

As has already been said, price is the only plus for the Nikons (and perhaps build quality). Although D40 is half the price of the 450D.

I own the D40, and it's a very fun camera - I just couldn't have afforded the Canons. :)

(and perhaps build quality). Although D40 is half the price of the 450D.

the 450D imo is no worse in build than the d40/d60, theyve changed the feel of it from the 400D quite a lot and lets face it, you dont buy any of these cameras for their build quality, if that bothered you you'd be looking at a 40D.

if i where you i would go into a shop and play with them both and decided which one you prefer before jumping in the deep end.

cheapest i seen a 450d is £500 and it wasnt even in stock...thats with the 18-55mm lens.

anywhere that it can be picked up a bit cheaper?
(new)....i dont really fancy spending £500 on a camera when im a complete noob.

but saying that...i really do like the camera and want a camera that i can practice and learn on and intend to keep it for 4-5 years.
i bought a small ixus for abt £250 last year and even tho its nice, the indoor shots are a bit poor and its where i take most photo's....i just dont want to do the same again where i spend not too much then so many months later i want another change.

What about the 1000D then? From what I can see it's specs are pretty good, plus its a lot cheaper.

Looking at the 450D price I'm glad I bought mine when I did, found the receipt yesterday looking for some stuff and I paid £480 :P

Hi

ive been looking at the 1000 last nite but even though image quality is meant to be pretty much the same....the reviews were poor in comparison ...yet it costs far less ?

i guess that has just put me off but ive just found a place that has the 450d for £470. would have liked it for £450 but what the hell is 20 quid lol:p

I'm still yet to see a really good comparison explaining how the 450D justifies the extra cost. Need to hunt down a review that compares them in plain english, rather than just a list of numbers. Found a great one comparing the 40D and the 450D like this, and was made glad that I chose the 450D :p

Have they still got the £50 rebate on the 450D?

if rebate is a saving then yes it says SAVE £48:p.
im surprised online is more expensive than walking into a local store.....but thats good for me as i can go buy it today.

from what i read there is only a few differences and i did read a fair bit about them...i really dont think they would even affect me apart from spot metering.
i just dont want to go half into it and then regret later...so il spend the little extra and hopefully not have any regrets.

My cheque took a month to come through. I sent it off mid december and got it a month later.

Same. I got my cheque about a couple of weeks ago, still waiting on some more cashback elsewhere which will bring the total I paid for my 450D + kit lens to something like £315 :)
