Before I start and ask the question I would like to point out I can and do make cakes, cooks steaks, pies etc (home made) however..

How do you boil potatoes and when are they done do they float or is there a time limit or as they are boiling you just wait until the waters gone?

Wanted to make mash but cant work out potatoes!

I cut them up, put them in a saucepan with cold water (natch) till the water boils, then let them cook in the boiling water 20-25 mins.

Stick 'em with a sharp knife, it should go through failry easily once they're cooked, it it doesn't they need longer.

Don't wait until the water's gone. Keep trying them, you'll know when they're soft enough by stabbing a knife into them. 20 minutes should be enough, if you cut them the right size.

If your knife goes in effortlessly, and the potato falls off effortlessly, they're done.

Over boil them and they'll fall apart.

like posted previously, stick in a sharp knife or even a fork and if it doesnt take any effort then they are done - usually about 20-25 mins after water has started to boil

i like my mash made with a nice lashing of cream and butter pre heated in the microwave added after putting the tatties through a ricer, once all combined to a nice smooth texture i give em a whip with a hand whisk - nom nom nom

Here's how I do it;

-wash and peel potatos, taking ages and getting peel everywhere
-chop them in half, or quarters if large
-heat pan of water until its boiling
-chuck in whats left of the mutilated potatos
-bring back to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes
-drain pan
-pick out the ones which fell in the sink
-add huge knob of butter + teaspoon of mustard (no milk)

Mash it all up, but not so much that it becomes paste.
