Escort Cosworth

And a Rover Coupe Turbo was quicker to 100 that it if we're gonna go down that road Fox. :p

Awesome car. Its pretty much spawned the road going rally reps such as the Evos and Scoobys. My mate was so fond of the Costin and Duckworth powered Ford he would always discredit the Subarus as a poormans cossie. Guess the tables on that have turned around now and Cosworth means money pit, shame hes not around now to see the Cosworth Impreza! RIP Chris.

Well no, I think it entirely illustrates my point beautifully. Now I'm sure an Escort Cosworth was a better car than a Rover Coupe Turbo but they are not THAT far away are they? Yet a Cosworth is now worth 30 times more than a Rover Turbo...

Whale tail premium tbh. If that rover had a spoiler that silly from the factory it would also be worth many pounds.

Ones motoring history/motorsport heritage whilst the other is brummies ****ing about with Vitesse lumps in little cars but I do see your point. Of course its that RS badge, same reason why the RS500 Focus has sold out before it was even on sale.

Its still the most recent 4x4 RS mind.

Most here are probably too young to remember or care, but back then at the time, Cosworth really meant something - they were almost a household name for car performance. The Escort Cosworth took it to extremes, and Ford put a huge amount of money and effort into the PR machine to promote it.

Ultimately that effort paid off. The RS and ST Focus cars today trade a significant part of their credibility on the old Escort Cossie, which in itself built upon the Sierra Cosworth, and the Saphire too IIRC.

Actually yes, the A5 3.0 TDI is 5.9 to 60, but stock Escort Cosworths are not under 6 seconds to 60.

Infact, from the Autocar roadtest back in the mid 90's a BMW 528i SE is just one tenth of a second slower to 100mph than a stock Escort Cosworth...

The 'book' time is 5.7 and the spoiler kills the acceleration after a while so no surprises they dont get to 100 all that quickly.

Doesnt stop them being utterly epic tho

Does the spoiler honestly have THAT much of an effect on accel? I know it's huge and all...

They were every self respecting teenagers wet dream car of the 90's. (I'm guessing Fox's BMW love affair had already started by this point :p)

The cossie was the epitamy of every teenagers thoughts of what made a great car, and any teenager will tell you that the bigger the spoiler the better the car. Regardless if there right or wrong.

Hell this still rings true in today's youth!

Trivia: My BMW love affair started when, aged 14, I rushed home with my new copy of Need for Speed Road Challenge. In it, the E39 BMW M5.

At the time, I had no idea quite what an effect it would have on the future :p

My friend has a mint standard one and a modern hot hatch will leave it behind point to point down a B road. He has one of the last with the big turbo and it has horrendous turbo lag no power until around 3k. The main let down is the standard brakes you think they aren't working when you first jump in it. The performance of a standard car isn't great as the 0-60 looks better than the overall performance as the 4wd offers what feels like endless grip.

The Escort is still great fun to drive and it still gets plenty of looks today (Probably people thinking it has been a long time since I saw a Escort on the road !). You have to remember performance wise cars have moved on a lot in 15-20 years a diesel C-Max is faster than a Mk2 Golf GTI or a 205 GTI but the older hot hatches have in general much better driver feedback and more chuck-ability due to being a lot lighter than todays cars.

Remember the Rover Metro turbo? That had a turbo boost guage... on the ceiling light on top of the rear view mirror!

The Mk1 didn't at least; it had a green LED bargraph in the tachometer.

EDIT: Sorry I just re-read my reply - it sounds best if you read it out in an adenoidal voice whilst wearing NHS specs :o

I had a 4x4 Sierra cosworth for a while was an awesome machine very raw although it did have 400hp..
Came very close to getting an escort but at the time decided against and went for a scooby P1 instead. Kind of regret not going for it as no chance now with 3 kids my fun car days are long gone....

Sierra over it any day.

However it still turns my head if I am lucky to see one in the street. Think it looks silly even for my tastes, but a formidable car.

The Rayland team Escort was outstanding. I cba to get a video up but that was a seriously seriously rapid car!! The box alone was worth a small island I believe.

I don't think they are on the go anymore though?

On a side note these two cars are also the only Ford's I have ever liked.
