There was an article written by one of the android devs where it went into detail why "task killers" are bad and not necessary.
Will try dig it out and edit this post to include the link.

You should always check the battery usage application built into Android to see what app is draining the battery the most. If you've got location awareness enabled via GPS and/or wifi networks then this will be oe of the biggest hits on battery up to 80%~.
Checking out Autokiller now.
That is all very well and good, but it certainly feels like the battery runs down at an accelerated pace when there are 10+ apps running in the background. The 3 points above don't explain why random apps that I don't access on a daily basis (like the tube info app) are suddenly running in the background.
Where is said battery usage app?
Big shout out to the runner, cyclists etc: My Tracks is superb. Brilliant and functional tracking app

I used this going for a run the other week and it was amazing!
But am I the only one that finds the Desire way too big to take running with you.
Another shout for sporty pal from me, although I haven't used My Tracks
ive only used sporty pal whilst cycling. so i have a bag with me, never tried running with it but i can imagine it would be a bit big!
