Essential Android Apps

Launcher Pro is a homescreen replacement, it will basically replace most of Touchwiz, so you can customise your homescreen/dock much more than you can with stock.

Been playing with Launcher Pro a bit... I'm in 2 minds really. I don't like the behaviour on resizing and I don't like the way you can only scroll down or up on the apps homescreen. However, I do like a lot of the other stuff like the widgets that come with the full version. Also, it seems a bit more picky about accuracy when pressing the screen than TW...

You also want to try out Go Launcher EX too, it gives you more options for the apps homescreen etc, you may prefer it to Launcher Pro. Resizing and such is different too.

I used to be a LauncherPro nut when I first got my phone... It was the first launcher I found and therefore in my eyes, the best lol

However, ADW Launcher EX is the daddy in my oppinion, I've tried LP, Go Launcher EX, OpenHome, aHome, Launcher7 (windows phone style launcher)... and out of all of those, ADW EX is king :)

It's not free (the non EX version is free, but it's worth paying for the extras :))

It's swings and roundabouts really, although I think ADW.EX probably has the most options etc, I really like some of the features of LauncherPro - like the popups for bookmarks/missed calls/unread sms etc.

It's worth trying them all though to decide, I tend to switch to another every few weeks :p

I actually think the standard TWLauncher with my phone is alright, it's just missing a few small things. Launcher Pro - I couldn't figure out how to re-order the home screens without manually dragging stuff across pages. Also I found the hold and release to resize function was annoying, as you had to hit the back button to get out of resize mode.

I'll give Go and ADW a try anyhow... I like customising stuff and fiddling about, but this stuff is immense. You can easily spend hours fiddling around with it.

I'd like to be able to get text wrap on the "desktop" icons, as it looks a bit pants when the end of the app name gets cut off. I tried disabling the text altogether in Launcher Pro but IMO it leaves too much of a gap between the rows.

how do i set my phone to not send my caller id? i used to be able to turn this off on my n95 but can't find how to do it on android. if it's not possible in settings is there any apps that'll quickly switch between hidding caller id to showing it?

also any apps that tell you the temparature of the room you're in rather then of the phone?

Sorry if its been asked before but can anyone point me in the direction of a good app for the gym? e.g to track lift weights, particular regimes etc?

I've been using calorie counter to plan meals etc which is working great, would just like to have a similar system to track what my workout that day consists of / what i should be aiming for etc.

Any ideas?

Does anyone know the name of an app that will display your GPS speed in the notification bar? I want to have my speed showing when using Google Navigation.

Cheers!

Well it's a bit hidden away but on mine its:
Settings -> Call settings -> GSM/WCDMA call settings -> additional settings -> Caller ID.

Huh? how would that work without an external sensor of some sort?

What are the most popular Browsers.

And say about 5 good games?

Was trying Skyfire but dont really like the layout.

Most of the browsers on the market are skins for the Android default browser (such as Dolphin). So if you find websites don't render correctly then you need Opera or Skyfire or Firefox. I use Dolphin HD as it gives the default browser nice features like tabbed browsing, clear cache on exit, better bookmarks etc...

As for games: Tetris, Angry Birds, Robo Defense, FIFA 10...

Jefit is pretty cool.

The lack of text wrap is what I hated too about the homescreen. Thankfully launcherpro allows you to rename stuff to shorten it but in the end I went for removing the labels all together. The gap was a problem like you said but if you change the amount of rows to 5 from the default of 4 it lessens the gap and looks better Plus you can fit more stuff on screen.

Anyone know of a music control widget that works with widgetlocker and the default samsung music player?. Ideally I would like one like on the default lock screen of the Samsug Galaxy S2 one except with a transparent background.

Made one with widgetsoid and its closest to what I want but it doesn't display album art and the play/pause button always shows pause even though the action works.

The galaxy S widget on market is no good.
