Essential Android Apps

If you are only installing apps from the market then it's a complete waste of time. All it will do is eat your battery.

AVG offer a free one, so I have installed that, just to be on the safe side.

As has already been said, I'm not 100% sure that it is really necesary though.

Do folks use a anti-virus app on their android phones, and if so what?

I've just got my new Galaxy S2 and I'm thinking I ought ought to have anti-virus before I download loads of apps. Also without reading through this entire thread any quick recommends for apps I can't live without for a non-rooted phone.

Cheers

You really do not need anti-virus. Forget it.

As said, unless you are installing random apps from random sources, you won't encounter any problems (and even then it is unlikely).

tbf, google have had to remove apps from the official app store. doesnt use much resources and isn't noticeable. so why not run one just in case

Because it does use resources and it's not needed.

Google have tightened everything up since the days of dodgy market apps.

Use one if you like but it's utterly pointless.

becuase the ios intereface is pretty slick and the ipod music player/organiser is very good i find. what music player apps are recommend for android?

PlayerPro is awesome.

Also loving Tasker at the moment. Running a 7 day trial.

I've got it doing all sorts, such as;

Full Brightness when using SMS, Gtalk or Phone, then return to Auto Brightness when i close the app

Full Brightness when the phone is ringing, auto when hung up

Open PlayerPro when an AUX cable is plugged in (in my car), and set the screen brightness to max and screen time out to 5 minutes so i can skip through tracks. It also turns the notification volume down so I don't deafen myself if I get a text.

Max Brightness on Charging

Turn GPS on when I leave my house, and off when I return

And Put my phone to silent from 12-9am and turn screen orientation off when I'm using my phone in bed

These are all simple tasks, i've barely scratched the surface.

Currently setting up a task that turns my computer on via wake on lan when I return to my house :p

Why on earth do you need max brightness for those tasks, unless you're in direct heavy sunlight then 50 percent is more than enough. Also don't bother with auto brightness, it's rubbish. Use a toggle and set it manually. :)
