Essential Android Apps

Hrm, I'm using JuiceDefender but it's never allowing my email to sync. I just manually sync'd and got emails that appeared in my inbox 6 hours ago... :(

How do I set this up so my email can sync say once an hour?

Just wondering, how is everybody finding GoSMS's performance when receiving and sending texts? While I love the app, it's just so slow...not a problem that I can fix, so I've just gone back to chompSMS again.

Sometimes sending texts it fails even when I have 2/3 bars. It keeps attempting to send though and gets through eventually.

Could be a problem with my network rather than the app though.

Can I ask the benifit of the other SMS apps?

for some reason , swift key beta x doesnt work with fields that require number input only, i have to switch back to the standard keyboard. bit of an odd one that, i really like beta x otherwise

Much more customizability of how you want your text message app to look, what notification icon you want, ringtone etc. settings for certain features.

Just try it out for a few days and have a look at all the other settings available and if you don't like it, simply uninstall and go back to your original SMS app :)

IMO go sms pro is the best out of handcent (far too bloated now, slow for me) and chompSMS (not as many features as handcent or go sms).

Wait are they just themes if you using teh GO launcher?

GO SMS pro is an SMS app that you will use instead of your default messaging app.

GO Launcher is a launcher app that replaces your homescreens pretty much.

Both completely different but by the same developer.

You can download themes for both of those apps if you want, just have a look on the market.

So, your email syncs ok without JD active? Do you have it set up as push or set to sync at specified intervals?

You can change how often JD switches data on to allow syncing with your accounts, but 2 hours is the maximum so that shouldn't see 6hr old emails not syncing. Unless you were out of data range during the times it turned the data on, which I guess is possible.

Have you got "Schedule" enabled in JD settings? I think if it's disabled it won't turn data on at all when the screen is off. When it's enabled, you can set it to allow data connections every 5m, 10m, 30m, 1h or 2h.

I wish you could customise Go Dialler the same way as you can Go SMS.

+1 that'd be perfect :)

I used to use Dialer2 (recommended by Khaaan!) but it started getting slow and FCing on me, so I've ditched that and gone back to the dark side (stock dialer) lol

You'll never catch me using the stock SMS app though - GO SMS is king! :) (just wish I could use the Handcent "Metal" skin on Go SMS :(

Well I've finally settled on a keyboard - FlexT9.
You can tap or swype and there's great prediction. Additionally there's handwriting (I don't use this) and also speech input. Nuance are the best at this (and will be doing it for iOS) so the speech recognition is really rather accurate and even if you have to make a correction still quicker than typing. I don't know how it is with accents though, mine is fairly 'standard,' if you're some filthy Northern peasant (;)) you might have trouble. Speech requires a data connection but it doesn't seem to use much data and I've used it in patchy reception situations.
Even without speech it's my preferred keyboard, the prediction is so fast and accurate.

I'll also give a nod to Switkey as it is a nice keyboard and does some clever prediction which will work for some better than others. I used it for a while and it didn't really work so well for me as I change up my style of writing a lot as I use my phone for a wide range of communication. But if you're more predictable then this could work out really quick, worth trying out.

Thumb Keyboard ***!

Layout and prediction is better due to the more advanced dictionary and previous work lookup before predicting the next word etc.

I now have 5 keyboards installed which I've been using ¬_¬

Thumb is definitely staying though as always liked CM keyboard over everything else before and this is the same but with more stuff!

I have a question about the default email app on my desire, I can't for the life of me get email push to work, to update my emails I actually have to open the app! What's up with that?
