Essential Android Apps

You don't need a automatic task killer app, it's totally pointless and will do more harm than good.

Android handles your memory perfectly well, and just because the task manager says an app is "running" doesn't mean it's actually doing anything.
It's probably just making use of all that lovely free memory that would otherwise be sitting idle, so when you do wish to start the app, it loads quicker.

Guys whats the best app for offline GPS/maps?

Normally use GPS with google maps, but im going around europe for the weekend in friends car so the GPS would be very handy but off course wont have 3g connection for Google Maps.

If free even better, if not then it should be ok still..

Thanks!

Is this the correct thread to talk about Android games? I just started playing Paradise Island, pretty good for killing 10min here and there, any other suggestions for similar games to kill some time on the commute?

Ndrive or Copilot, cost though

Anyone noticed that the last update (it was a few weeks ago I think, I'd just forgot about mentioning it) for Opera Mobile fixed the problem where when typing out a post it wouldn't always save when you pressed done/back?

So ****ing glad that it's fixed. I used to hate it when I forgot about it after typing out a long post only to lose the whole thing, was annoying having to copy/paste everything I typed just incase it happened :p.

You can cache maps on google maps now, I think there's the option in the labs section. Works brilliantly abroad. Just download the areas you need before you go, then when you're there you can use gps without charge. Worked great for me in Italy although I wasnt driving.

You can only cache 10 maps though afaik, which for driving around Europe isn't really enough.

You could stop at places that have free wifi though, get something to eat/drink or whatever and download some maps. This obviously wouldn't be ideal however.

You could also just use data to download maps, I can't imagine that they're very big so it shouldn't cost that much (obviously you'd want to make sure you disable sync on other apps so you don't accidently use it).

Depending on whether you're going to be using your phone for calls/texts you could get a PAYG sim card (probably easiest getting one here, as I have no idea whether one from the country you're in would need to be registered or how difficult that would be as a foreigner) and chuck some credit on it (make sure roaming is enabled before you go, as some can't be enabled out of the country) as that would probably be cheaper than buying a decent sat-nav app with European maps.

You can normally get decent sized data bundles (if they're just being used for downloading some maps) for fairly cheap, I'm sure someone else will know decent bundles or the cost for data bundles on your network and at how much data you'd be looking at using (roughly).

Edit: Just got the market update on my phone. I hadn't bothered downloading it separately as from the pictures it looked worse than the old market, now it's installed I can't help but feel it's worse than the old market :(.

I'll leave it installed for a bit and see how I feel, but I'm guessing I'll end up going back to the old one.

Download CoPilot with ALL maps it's around 4GB. You can then install whichever maps you require, I only installed UK & Ireland but you have all of Europe on there.

I don't mind it doing this, except I had a game that would load in the background ready to play constantly, even though I hadn't played it in a while. As soon I closed it completely it would "start up" again. Ended up deleting the game.

250+ pages of essential apps is too much for me to go through!

I have been using an S2 for a week, here is what I currently have and use:

Whatsapp
Viber
CoPilot
Dolphin Browser
TuneIn Radio
Angry Birds
SNESoid

What other essential apps am I missing? Currently on stock rom.

Yeah I've had no issues with SNESoid except the trigger buttons being placed on the top corners of the screen making them impossible to use! What other good emulators are worth a download?
