Essential Android Apps

Any 'to do' apps that I can share with my wife's phone, we could do with adding things each that synch's together so we can pick up stuff for each other.

I imagine the easiest way would just be using something that syncs with Google and then using a shared email for tasks/calendar.

I don't use a tasks app so can't really recommend any.

Just do what the Wife and me do, and share our Google/Outlook.com Calendars with each other!!

I'm a 'Co-Owner' on both my Wife's Calendars, and She's the same on mine!, means we can stick stuff in each others calendars and the next time our phones sync (or Push) Appointments, To-Do's and silly messages pop up in our phone's calendar apps (she's got a Lumia 620, and I've a Nexus 4)

Works very nicely, doesn't need any 3rd party software (except Gmail and Outlook.com) on each device! :)

Anyway, Nova has a beta update which improves a few things chief of which I'd the way folders in the drawer behave and look:

I found it really buggy. If I've got for example a 10% transparent app drawer background, opening a folder would make it completely transparent.

Wasn't sure where else to put this..

You can force certain apps to remain in memory. I've forced Phone and Contacts, and they open instantly now, whereas before there was probably a half second delay.

Make a local.prop in /system/data

Add the lines;

sys.keep_app_1=com.android.phone
sys.keep_app_2=com.android.contacts
sys.keep_app_3 etc

:)

that sounds good benjo, but can you make an idiots guide to doing that :(

Use a text editor like notepad and make a file called 'local.prop' with the lines

sys.keep_app_1=com.android.phone
sys.keep_app_2=com.android.contacts

You can add more apps, just number them accordingly. You'll need to find the package name for the apps. The easiest way is to use the play store, for example;

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andrewshu.android.reddit

Save this 'local.prop' to your phone, and move it to your system root /data folder :)

I’m visually impaired and I’m looking for an app that will magnify everything on screen, maybe into a virtual desktop type thing. Whenever I try searching all I find are apps that use the camera to as a magnifier, but I’m looking for something that works like the Windows Magnifier.

Any suggestions?

What phone? Stock Jellybean has a setting in Accessibility called 'Magnification gestures'.

I have an HTC Wildfire, but I'm thinking of buying a Nexus 7 or 10, and that's my main concern.

I've just found this which looks like it will do the job, but now I have to go through all the dicking around to add my phone to Google Play just to download it. :/

Yup, like I said you need to be on Jellybean (4.1+). You should probably connect to the store anyway just to get updates for your existing apps!
