Essential Android Apps

Gone back to SwiftKey now. Just making too many mistakes with Google's keyboard. Probably just down to practice, but in any case...

Also I miss the cursor arrows and have never found gesture typing faster or less effort than just tapping.

Hey quick question guys. I have just got my S4 and its all stock at the moment and I have put Opera Mobile on it. But the text for the Opera menus etc is tiny!! I have gone into the opera:config options and tried upping the Minimum text size but it doesn't seem to work? Any ideas?

Seems an odd thing to do to me... Amongst other things, WiFi is usually more battery efficient than mobile data, why would you have it urn on and off between apps?

No point having it searching for Wi-Fi all day if for example you only have access to Wi-Fi at home. Also perhaps if your Wi-Fi is dog slow (like mine) but perhaps you need it for an app or two.

I find it more use for turning GPS on and off and adjusting screen brightness/timeout with Google maps etc. Yes I know GPS isn't used unless an app wants it, but I'd rather decide which app gets to use it! :p

TBH that's only scratching the surface though. For example I use Tasker to display a red notification led when charging at a decent speed and a purple led when on USB charging (when if I've got the screen on, the battery will often continue to go down at a lower rate) as otherwise the only way to be sure is to go into battery settings or watch the battery percentage like a hawk!

The other useful thing is to switch my phone to vibrate when I'm at work/otherwise engaged as per Google calendar (only for events marked as 'busy'). Saves me having to worry about it!

I just leave Wifi on permanently. When it's not in use it seems to use approximately 0.0000005% of the battery.
I was doing that but I found that I never received WhatsApp messages if I had wifi turned on but not connected (eg when I'm at work)
but as soon as I turned off the wifi I received WhatsApp messages that were sent to me hours ago.
Very annoying.

I sent an email to WhatsApp Support about it but never got any reply.

Am I the only one that see's zero difference in the Google keyboard update?
What difference should I look for?
Don't think there is one for Jelly Bean users. They're just removing core apps from the O/S which makes those apps available to a larger audience (ICS as well as JB users) via the Play store and allows them to be updated without needing to update the O/S. Should help minimise fragmentation in the future.

Not really used the Google keyboard that much but the change imho is better support of the Swype style of typing.if you don't use that you are mad but you won't notice much difference.:-)

I use unified remote as my HTPC controller in the living room. It's great. Can wake up the upstairs pc if there's a movie or something on there too then sleep it afterwards, all without moving off the sofa.

Team Viewer has an option to shutdown the PC, it's free and small in size but since it's predomenantly used as a remote desktop... you'd essentially be using a sledge hammer to crack a nut.
