ok...

so i need an ethernet cable long enough to reach downstairs..

it goes...out of my round...down the stairs ...through another room (downstairs) and to the router.

i searched around and found on OCers:

Belkin Cat5e Network Patch Cable 30m (A3L791B30M-S) [A3L791B30M-S]
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CB-197-BE&groupid=46&catid=1799&subcat=

now...is that really 30 metres and at that price?

because ive also searched around a competitor ....and found that even a belkin 10m ethernet cable is £30..

anyone tell me why?

Cat5/Cat5e/Cat6 cables are very expensive pre-made from the usual retail outlets. We get 300m rolls of Cat5e for £30 at work, pre made 10m cables are £1.12 when I last bought some (about a month ago)

I bought a 305m reel of cat5e about 4 years ago for £45, wired up two houses so far. That's about 15p per metre + cost of cable ends at 10p a pop and some rubber grommets for 10p each if you want it doing fancy:p. Can get the crimping tools for about £10-15 and over time it pays back for itself. This is how oc can sell the cables so cheap. They are still selling at about double the materials cost. Makes you see what a rip off some places are.

Because most highstreet PC stores shaft the general public who don't know any better.

lol....

i see....so...is that the cable i should be getting?

the Belkin Cat5e Network Patch Cable 30m (A3L791B30M-S) [A3L791B30M-S]

i just want a normal ethernet cable (a long one) to connect to my BT business hub port =/

i see....guess i should never buy stuff from a competitor....NEVER EVER AGAIN! :p

If you only need 30m, we've got tons spare - happy to send you 30m of Cat5e in the post (free of charge)

yes but its only 1 year warranty...whereas belkin has a life-time warranty...

Shouldn't need a warranty on a cable - quite silly.

but do these cables easily break?

They can take a lot of abuse, but they don't spontaneously combust - you'll never need a warranty, it's cheap enough to replace it if the cable gets attacked by scissors.

i mean...like how long would they really last?

Years and years and years and years - if you look after it.

No strings attached lol, just a bit of generosity - we've got more cable than we'll ever use.
