Eurocarparts Triple QX oil any good?

 I don't throw the oil down the drain..!
I take it to a local garage who then dumps it in their used oil barrel.

The car sounds better after an oil change. It's what I have done every since I bought my own car :/

Manufactures service intervals are there for a reason. Our work transits are on 30k oil change intervals and last well beyond 100k miles.

I only do an oil change once a year on a high mileage engine that makes also double the power it left the factory with

I don't get your point.

Some people on these forums change their oil far more often than I do.

I should hope not!! ;) But if we're assuming millions and millions of people around the world do this, it means that extra oil needs to be extracted from the ground and transported, processed, refined etc which all uses up lots of energy.

The old oil also needs to be transported several times, it needs to be processed, decontaminated and refined all of which use up energy also. There are also extra risk of spillages from this. It also costs *lots* of money to handle and properly dispose of waste oil, which is why many people will just dump it.

Obviously recycling it properly is the least impactive way, but when you consider all the extra risks and energy that has to be used up for absolutely no benefit whatsoever, it's all a bit unnecessary with modern synthetic oils.

If your car doesn't sound like it's running at it's optimum after running for 4k on the same high quality, synthetic oil, then you need to switch oil or get the car fixed. I've never noticed a difference in the running of any of my cars after an oil change, except that my wallet was slightly lighter and I now had to try and find time to go to the dump with some old horrible oil.

Would have to be an independent test running identical bench engines under identical load conditions for the same duration's and cycles, its just complex and expensive.

Yeah it obviously could be done, but I don't think enough people care for anyone to be bothered enough to do it. We trust what's written on the bottle in the hope that the companies reputation depends on it. We never really know what is inside most things we buy, we just have to trust that it is as claimed.

We need to remember, Castrol don't employ sheds full of people just to sit in a lab and read the newspaper, i'd rather pay a little more for an "expensive" oil under the knowledge that at a minimum it won't be any worse than the cheap stuff.

The issue is that cheap doesn't always mean poor quality. Castrol products might be over engineered to 120% of what they need to, but TripleQX oils might *just* about pass the manufacturers test conditions. Neither will be detrimental to an engine, as long as they have under gone those test. More expensive oils will also have passed more recent approvals (LL04 vs LL01), but from what I can see, these are often only centred around emissions regulations, rather than the engine wear. For example - LL04 is only a necessity in newer BMW diesel engines. BMW still recommend LL01 for their gasoline engines. The testing for manufacturer approvals is hugely expensive for oil companies, which is why the prices are more expensive for the end product. Many oil producers don't even bother with the approvals because they are just too expensive, even though their oils would likely pass with flying colours.

My point is that many, many things affect the price of an oil rather than just it's quality. Shell Ultra Helix stuff is cheaper than TripleQX stuff and costs me £18. Does this mean it is likely to be worse than the TripleQX stuff?
