Euromillions

Why is it that people go out and buy tickets/more tickets on a rollover like this? It's as if people are like 'Screw £40m, I don't play unless the jackpot is £100m'

Either way your chances of winning are same, near 0

Well they're not... more like 116 million or so to 1... very far from 0 otherwise people wouldn't win it every week.

I said YOUR chance of winning, not the chances someone would win. Besides if people are winning it every week, how have we got to a £126m roll over?

In percentage terms, your personal chances of winning are 0.000000009% (You're nearly 9 times more likely to win the standard lottery) . I would say my original phrase of "near zero" was correct don't you?

I think your more likely to get struck by lightning several times on the way to buy the ticket than to actually win. Still you have absolutely 0 chance if you don't have a ticket. ;)

You know what they say about the lottery. 'A tax on the stupid'.

If that's right, then I'm in!

And if I do win, I'd like you all to know, it will change me, and I will give up work. :D

Everyone's chances are the same... it's a lottery.

I never claimed they weren't, although people with more lines obviously have a higher chance of winning.

That doesn't detract from the fact that in terms of probability you're more likely to get run over, sleep with Megan Fox and get struck by lightning all in one day than win the Euromillions.

If I win first thing I'm gonna do is let you guys know;), then I will arrange an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas for everyone on OcUK that can attend.

So what?

The chance is there and people win it.

Say "The lottery is a tax on the stupid" to the winners...

The chances of winning just a tenner on the standard UK lottery is 1 in 57. If a bookies offered those kind of odds/payout ratio they'd go out of business in a week and yet thousands of people in the country who would never think of going into a bookies and 'gambling' happily go out and buy a Lotto ticket each win.

That last line justifies the expression alone.

...and here's another

going to put £50 on fridays draw!

I bet the above poster wouldn't dream of putting £50 on a 10 to 1 outsider at Kempton though (despite the odds of winning being millions of times better).

Just bought two tickets online, but you can only add a minimum of £5, so I added £6, bought two tickets and played an instant win with my remaining £2.

Won £7 :D

So I'm better off than when I started and have my two tickets as well :D
