Back on topic did vela score for sociedad? He must have, must have assisted his own goal too.
So people still being stupid in here because I've never claimed Vela to be the best in the world, nor claimed he scores or assists every game.
It was actually a relatively poor performance all around, Vela was excellent with some great runs in the first 10 mins, but judging from how little he moved and how slowly I got the impression he was actually carrying an injury. He missed one great chance, had a couple others, a few great driving runs up the wing but not much after 20-25mins in, though they missed his movement later on. The second he was subbed the team were massively worse, people really should realise that when one player stands out as excellent other teams will often double/treble up on that player which is what happened, thats why they tend to switch wings much more than earlier in the season to shake things up. The second he went off Deportivo pushed forwards more and, wow, not high quality game but tense and exciting, Deportivo could have scored a half dozen goals, sooo many nervous mistakes, poor clearances.
I thought Valencia might nick it because of the general experience a usually top 6 team with a deeper squad has come the end of the season(there is a reason Arsenal don't get noticeably worse in the final 10 games while Everton, Spurs, and most other 5-10th place teams do), Sociedad were crazy nervous and it showed, and the pressure has shown in the last 4-5 games. Against Real Madrid offensively and midfield they outplayed them for the vast majority but the mistakes at the back were huge and very costly.
Over the season there is no question Sociedad deserved 4th place, the Valencia game was awesome, and completely insane though. Went ahead, looked utterly comfortable then Sevilla scored out of nothing, then got a penalty, then a from what I saw utterly ridiculous red card.... nuts game.
I was watching both games, I'm fairly sure there was an elbow on a Valencia player that was clearly on purpose, and WAY WAY worse than the one the Valencia guy did to get sent off, and later on there was another Sevilla elbow that was somewhere between the two that I think had nothing.
The Sociedad game, Griezman did an utterly ridiculous lunging scissoring tackle towards the end of the game, should have been a straight red, and probably around 5 minutes before that a Deportivo did a similar yet no where near as bad lunging tackle, both should have got reds and the guys on the receiving end very very lucky not to be hurt.
Its really ridiculous Sociedad have a 40mil euro budget, 5mil of which is the academy, if they get through what I assume would be qualification rounds the champs league money effective increases their budget by 50+%.
Lot on the line today, Deportivo haven't really deserved to stay up, they were one of the few teams that had opposition that had anything left to fight for. Likewise Sociedad were pretty lucky Sevilla had Europe to fight for thanks to about eleventy teams being banned for being in debt. Some outstanding goals scored up and down the league today though, plenty of belters from the edge or outside the box. Griezmans goal, still can't decide if he sliced it and got lucky or if it was truly brilliant...
Still can't believe the manager/owners couldn't come to an agreement, mental that he's now passed up champs league football for mid table Ligue 1 action. He's got Sociedad playing so damn well, if he does well at Rennes as well I think someone will be looking at him for a job at a big team in the near future.
My prediction is though that a lot of players will stay for next season and the champs league, but the extra games and pressure will probably do a Newcastle on the team and push them way down the table, but I fear that will spark a exodus of the top talent end of next season.
