*** Eurovision 2021 ***

Its not a serious music competition and has never pretended to be one either so I’m not sure why we are getting so excited? It’s just become political euro nonsense to highlight those countries that would never ordinarily be taken seriously on the worlds musical stage.

It looks like a serious political support for the European Union idea and is strangely in May around the great Russian WWII victory over Germany, and the Eastern Europe Slavic culture national holiday on the 24 May.

As I said it in my previous post, Europe and the whole world for that matter have a very serious problem with the music today, there isn't one pan-European united music channel to broadcast the different nations' music acts and to make them popular across the continent.

The American MTV is long dead about the music.

Isn't that a problem the internet and streaming services/ youtube has caused? There is so much choice now to choose from when it comes to music.

Most music played on the radio in Germany is British or American, same in most of Europe. Most acts that aren't still sing in English.

It's genuinely weird sometimes. I was in an Irish bar here and they had a guy with a guitar singing Irish drinking songs. I tried to talk to him, and it turned out he can't speak English despite singing in it.

If you look back to the last time we were relatively successful the 90’s the songs and artists we were putting in were noticeably better. We are really scraping the barrel these days with some terrible songs and dire performances.

How come no one even remembers we came 3rd in 2002 with a girl from Pop Idol, who got dropped right after releasing the song?

UK haven't moved from the right side of the score board, nor much higher than the bottom of it for many years, so low scoring for us was even before Brexit was a thing.

The song and performer this year was rubbish, but I do still think there's something political or otherwise that Europe dislikes about the UK. But as suggested in the thread, if we could get an outrageous, quirky or eccentric performer in the classic style of Eurovision, something that really grabs the viewers attention, we might actually score some points.

On the other hand, UK has always been and still is the pioneer of 'proper' pop music. Outside of Eurovision, all these countries buy records from UK and US artists. Who knows of many pop stars outside UK and US apart from Abba? In other words, we're better than Eurovision, and Eurovision is all these other countries have to show off their talent which is usually forgotten about not long after, much like x factor winners that no-one can remember either.

I still don't think there's anything political going on here in terms of the public vote, yes the jury voting is still slightly cliquey with greece/Cyprus and some of the baltic states but even that's been much better in recent years.

In terms of the public vote I just don't buy in to this idea that loads of Europeans are sat at home saying "I'm not voting for the UK regardless of their song, I hate those guys!", that seems to be more our bag than Europe's. I just think for the last 20 years or so we haven't "got" Eurovision. I think if we want to actually compete we should at least respect the competition enough to properly embrace it.

On the flip side, for those saying we're more about serious mainstream music, this track didn't even break the UK top 100. It's not only the Eurovision audience that thinks it's crap so maybe if we are going to stick to our guns we could at least put up a song that is at least capable of breaking the top 40.

The UK has won twice since France last won. There's a lot of countries taking part these days, I don't think we really do so badly.

Just watched the UK entry. Fully deserving of no points. That was abysmal.

Italy's entry was awesome. Great to see a more traditional rock number in there rather than the standard pop crap we get every year. The energy and vocals were first class.

It was a poor UK song, last years was better but he couldn't use the same song because... rules, I guess.

Not sure it was worthy of no points, one of the female artists (Moldova?) dropped the mic mid performance giving us all a nice "thud" sound in the middle of the song, even they didn't get nil points lol

I think the problem is the serious artists wouldn’t be seen dead performing in such a circus hence why we get the nil point acts but that’s ok because its a carnival appreciated far more for its flamboyance than actual skill level which is just as well...

Hahahahahaha

That was my reaction when after watching a pre recorded episode of “The Killing”, we switched over and watched the last 15 minutes of the public votes, having seen none of the alleged singers or their songs.
I saw the big fat zero for U.K. and France and Switzerland vying for top position, and laughed like a drain.
My patriotic wife went nuts, “You were glad that you lived here when you had that heart attack 26 years ago, you one eighth French moron, weren’t you?”
She was right, for all it’s admittedly not many failings, I’m happy that my passport says U.K. on the front.

Can't vote for France, because France.

And there it is.

I dunno French song has that look at me thing about it that will put off voters. That and they are almost as hated as much as us across the Globe.

I doubt that the French are hated that much, disliked maybe, although I can’t see why.

Why are France and Switzerland getting any points?

Perhaps the juries think that they deserve the points, or who knows, maybe it is a tad political.

We may as well never bother again :D

One can only hope.

We are so hated.

As with France, I don’t think that U.K. is hated, perhaps intensely disliked in some places.

So I just realized what happened with 2020, the competition was cancelled and all the acts had to submit new songs for 2021.

They should have let them do the same songs, a lot of the acts had better songs in 2020.
