EV general discussion

Tesla Supercharger V4 seem to be better with longer cables, but not sure when the one I use will ever be upgraded.

If Tesla sold a CCS extension cable I might be interested.. but they don't and that's probably a good thing.

It’s being able to manual disconnect a live cable without the correct isolation and release time that chargers and cars usually control!!
I don't think you can unplug a CCS cable until the charging has been stopped from either end first, it's locked isn't it? Disconnecting it mid flow would cause the issues you mentioned, like a poor connection for a millisecond and risk arching etc.

Ah at the join in this theoretical cable? Yup that would be troublesome.

I don't think I would worry about safety, the CCS standard requires a flow of data to keep the charge going as I understand it. I probably wouldn't want to test that theory. I'd be more concerned about damaging my car.

Correct, got there in the end didn’t you.

There is a mechanical manual release on the Model 3. If you pull it then the software notices and stops the charge. But if you did it quickly enough or pulled the cable only just enough, or there was some software problem, then I'm sure you could pull the plug mid-charge. You'd probably get quite big flash when you do.

Wait till you hear about petrol pumps though, don't even have a lock, you can pull the nozzle out and spray highly flammable benzine all over the place!

Oh don’t start with anti ICE stuff here. It’s pathetic. Especially when you have a gas hob at home

Sorry, that wasn't my intent, I'm not anti-ICE. I just find critique of new technology funny in the face of the things we have no trouble accepting about existing technology.

I've gone electric after a few months of considering, gone for a Tesla M3 lr 2020 model, more for performance than any cost saving on fuel although that is going to be a big bonus, I have a feeling I have a few things to learn also, it's going to be a big upgrade for me from my 2006 civic which has been rock solid ....

Have you driven one. Great in a Straight line but wooden brakes but don’t be surprised a 15 year newer car is better.

GV70 EV - just 400 miles on it in a month as I still have my Polestar 2 so have been using that for all the shorter runs.

Likes:

Power
Comfort in default comfort mode. Very good.
Luxury - General dashboard, seats etc.
Cabin is so quiet (double laminated glass)
Head up display
Physical buttons (and to be fair the HVAC haptic controls are great as well.)
Remote app - It can do so much more than the Polestar 2.
Charging speed.
360 Cameras - both the clarity and the blind spot cameras when you indicate
Matrix LEDs
Rear visibility, particularly when reversing in the dark.
Efficiency is surprisingly good. I got almost 4 miles per kWh on a 15 mile drive at 14°C earlier.

Dislikes

Suspension comfort when in sports mode.
Grip in cold temperatures on 19" Michelin pilot sport 4 SUV tyres seems poor.
Can't use Android auto google maps and the cars inbuilt sat-nav at the same time!
No cornering lights.
Frunk is pathetic.

Annoyances
Defaulting to level 1 regen (I like to coast).
Defaulting to lane keep assist as on.
Too many beeps and bongs.
USB A ports, its not 2015.

I Had another gridserve charge today with battery pre-conditioned on the way there.

25-80% took less than 17 minutes and peaked at 235kW. So good.

I have briefly and I meant the straight line performance, that will wear off but theres a lot I like about the car too

Do those Apple CarPlay figures take into account the fact that after 30 seconds of "I'm on it............ Still working............" You get a load of completely unsuitable results and end up typing in your search anyway? :p

Question for the EV owners... What percentage of the photos on your phone are of your car charging, a charger or the dashboard? :p

On a related note, that gridserve screen is missing a trick. All that blank space that could be generating ads revenue!

I've nothing against EV's but at the moment they don't suit my situation due to lack of driveway.

Besides, things may cook faster in the microwave, but they taste better in the oven.

test drove the updated model 3. That is one nice pice of kit!

Only had it for 30mins, but lots of roundabouts, the indicators are fine. Fast enough from 0-60 for every day driving too.

Going to get one in the new ultra red.
